Aguila Sandwich Shop

We visited the Aguila Sandwich Shop at 3200 W Hillsborough Ave on 9 October 2009. This was our first visit to Aguila’s but we drive by it almost every day. We’d have visited sooner but they’re closed on Sunday, and sometimes we like breakfast on Sunday. It’s such a cute little cozy building.

aguila-outside

OK, to be perfectly honest, we like breakfast every day. Not just “sometimes” on Sunday. Our dear Marek, who is gaining an appreciation for poetry (he seems to like a bit of Pablo Neruda for a bedtime story. Or Cat in the Hat. It’s a toss-up.), is busy composing verse about an important cultural issue. He hasn’t shared the completed work with me yet, but it starts out with a similar tone to Rilke’s Duino Elegies. He recited it to me as we drove to Aguila’s:

“I want monkey. I want MonKEEEE. I WANT monkey. Dada. I want Monkey.”

aguila-monkey

We got inside and immediately liked this place. It was 0800 on a Friday and it was almost full. It seemed like a nice collection of older retirees and working folks on the way to work. Well-worn but not unclean. The host seemed to greet almost everyone by name as they came in, and we know that’s a really good sign.

aguila-inside2

We might have to come back for the especialidad, which is more of a lunch thing. Marek used this little paramedic truck throughout the morning to reel in everyone that walks by. He’d roll it right off the table and wait for folks to pick it up. Most times he’d have to go get it himself, but he gave a cheerful “gracias!” to anyone who helped him.

aguila-menu2

We flipped the menu and were a little concerned. The breakfast offerings were a little terse. That’s 8 items on the breakfast menu.

aguila-menu

But with pancakes on the docket, we’re in good shape. I had the cafe con leche. Marek had none, for once. I think he’s trying to cut back on his caffeine as part of some new age yoga thing he’s been doing in his spare time. Not me, though. This was some deeeelicious coffee. Really fine stuff.

aguila-cafe

While we waited, Marek turned on the charm. I think he’s taking dramatic classes in the evenings. Along with his yoga and poetry.

aguila-marek-cute3aguila-marek-cute4

One of the things we look for in a Tampa Bay Breakfast is the unique factor. Does a TBB have something that no other place has? Besides Marek, since there’s only one of him in the whole universe and at any given time he’s having breakfast in only one place. Unless the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Entanglement applies to little boys as well as distant quantum particles. But quantum theory aside, what makes Aguila’s special? Well, it’s the only Tampa Bay Breakfast we’ve been to where we noticed a humidor. Those are some enormous stogies!

aguila-cigars2

Yak, yak, yak. You’re wondering if I’ll ever get around to the breakfast, aren’t you? We had breakfast and it was good. Real good. Marek had the pancakes. A set of three that weren’t enormous but they also weren’t expensive, so we’ll call it even.

aguila-pancakes2

And I’d love to tell you if they were tasty or not, but I never got any. Marek gave these pancakes the Bionic Elbow treatment. Those pancakes rue the day they met Marek!

aguila-pancakes

I tried the breakfast sandwich. I was apprehensive at first, but I’m here to tell you that this sandwich was so good it made me feel like adopting it as a second child. Muy delicioso! This was with scrambled eggs, yellow cheese (by recommendation), and chorizo. This filled me up so good, I didn’t eat another thing until almost suppertime.

aguila-sandwich2

I’m still thinking about that sandwich. I might go get another one right now. But first, Tampa Bay Breakfasts! When we were done, Marek paid the bill.

aguila-marek-pays

And he made himself at home behind the counter. I’m always surprised folks don’t hand him an apron and a broom. Put that tiny hiney to work!

aguila-marek-pays2

When we were done, Marek went around and gave everyone adios kisses. Then we went home.

aguila-adios

Aguila Sandwich Shop didn’t have the normal menu we like. And they’re a paper-plate place, which is not always something I want when we’re out. But Marek loved the place, the food is truly outstanding, and the family and all the customers are top-shelf friendly and welcoming. I would not hesitate for a moment to return to Aguila’s — we’ll be back with our favorite guest reviewer, Mom! Oh, and our pancakes, juice, cafe con leche, and ginormous sandwich all fit in on a ten-spot. That’s a good value!

aguila-businesscard

We’re pleased to give Aguila Sandwich Shop a Tampa Bay Breakfast four pancake rating!

one-pancakeone-pancake1one-pancake2one-pancake3

I’m starting to think that we need a special category for desayunos, where we don’t penalize for there not being grits and biscuits on the menu (not, mind you, that we usually get grits or biscuits). We tend to approach breakfast from a Southern eggs-bacon-pancakes diner perspective, which is just not what you get at these fabulous places. I’d like to hear from our readers on this!

Pinky’s

We are the Pancakinators.

pinkys-pancakinators

We visited Pinky’s Restaurant at 3203 Bay to Bay Blvd on 27 September 2009. This was our first visit to Pinky’s, and we heard about it through our Recommendation Page.

pinkys-outside

Parking is in back. There appears to be a parking war going on in this little strip. Many spots have “no Pinky’s parking” signs (the smaller sign on the left). Apparently Pinky’s and Cappy’s across the street have some sort of Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement, while Pinky’s and the Giggle Box seem to have recalled their diplomatic missions and started calling each other names in the U.N. general assembly.

pinkys-parking

This is a nice place. Eclectic and homey, but not dirty or messy. A little funky but not so much as to be kitschy. A good vibe here. Note the barista machine along the wall. That, my fine feathered friends, is always a good sign.

pinkys-bar1

The menu has a “full English breakfast” on it. Marek actually learned to walk whilst living in England and his very first breakfasts in restaurants were “full English.” We’ve moved on from that chapter of our lives and now we focus on pancakes. While it’s a bloody shame that we don’t have any pictures of our English breakfasts, we do seem to have plenty of pictures of the pubs. In honor of Pinky’s English, here’s a classic picture of Marek having a packet of crisps and a pint of Cambridgeshire Greyhound. Please note my proper use of the words “whilst,” “bloody,” “crisps,” and “proper.” We try to maintain high standards here at TBB.

floods5

Enough about the good ole days, we’re here to talk about a Tampa Bay Breakfast! Our charming waitress Cary informed us that Pinky’s had recently won a “Best of the Bay” award, they had a glowing review in a local newspaper last week, and business was out the door, as you can see here. Oh, and today’s special was some Eggs Benedict thing that I’m sure is great if you don’t have pancakes on the brain. And if you like Eggs Benedict.

pinkys-standingroomonly

By now you’re wondering if we got any of that high-test coffee. Well stick my finger in a light socket and call me perky, we surely did. And it was very fine, indeed. I got to choose our coffee cups from the shelf. Cary informed me that she buys them at local thrift stores (I told her about Martha’s Restaurant on Nebraska, with similar cups). I chose the sailor cup for myself and the Canadian Mounties for Marek, in honor of our friend Hugh in British Columbia. Marek gave the coffee a lick to see if it needed salt, or trucks, added.

pinkys-coffee

So we skipped the Benedicts and the English breakfast (now that I write this, I realize that there’s some sort of Revolutionary War subtext, perhaps being played out in the parking lot skirmishes we saw when we drove up), and went straight for the pancakes. We were steered to the oatmeal pancakes, which were not very large in diameter but more than made up for it in verticality. These were some filling cakes, baby! The eggs, though, were clearly from Top Shelf Chickens. These were the best scrambled eggs I’ve had in months. And the bacon would be, might be maybe, just good enough to invite Steve from Yankeetown.

image048

Marek wasted no time at all. Outta my way, old man. Pancakes!

pinkys-breakfast-marek

I’m telling you, this was good coffee. All you can drink, and several varieties. You just have to get up and get it yourself from the bar.

pinkys-marek-coffee

I’m pretty sure that Marek’s sitting here wishing he had that pint of Greyhound from the pub picture above. I know I could go for one of those about now.

pinkys-good-marek

So we had this delicious, filling, eclectic, fun breakfast. We were happy. What happens next? You guessed it. Some folks go to a hockey game and a fight breaks out. Some go to a boxing match and a hockey game breaks out. Us? We go to breakfast and Monster Truck Races break out.

pinkys-monstertruck

After we survived Big Foot and Grave Digger battling for the mastery of the entire universe, Marek decided to pay the bill. (There were, after all, about a thousand people waiting outside, as you saw above, so it’s only polite to open up the table and let someone else try the pancakes.)

pinkys-marek-pays1

He found his way, with some showing off for the baby in the high chair. From the way that kid’s eyeballing Marek, I am pretty sure he’s wondering where a kid Marek’s age got a twenty.

pinkys-marek-pays2

Next thing you know, Marek’s behind the bar, smokin’ and jokin’. Pourin’ espressos and cutting cigars. Shakin’ hands and talkin’ to reporters. Gettin’ phone numbers from the ladies. Operating. This boy’s like the Mayor of Breakfast. If he were two feet taller, I’d be working for him.

pinkys-marek-pays3

When he brought the change back I’ll admit that there was not much left of Old Hickory. A.J. (as I like to call Andrew Jackson when I have private conversations with him) was whittled down to five poor Georges. Fifteen bucks is a heap of cash for a breakfast for a crew as small as ours. It was good, real good, but that’s still a premium charge. We paid the bill and hollered “adios amigos!” … poorer, but happy nonetheless.

pinkys-bye

This was a superb Tampa Bay Breakfast. An interesting locale and decor. Unique and outstanding food. Coffee: Bold Beans, Bountiful Blackness, Bottomless But Basic. Ballistic Barista! Cary was not only cheerful and a pleasure to chat with, but she’s got this mad skillz thing with the giant chalk board and the daily special artwork. This is a solid four-pancaker Tampa Bay Breakfast, without a doubt. We’re going to bump to 4.5 because we were treated like we were already old friends; I feel like they’d remember our names if we popped in again, and that’s worth a lot to us. Because of that, we’re pleased to give this Tampa Bay Breakfast a rating of four and a half pancakes.

one-pancakeone-pancake1one-pancake2one-pancake3half-pancake

(We seem to be handing out a lot of fours and four-and-a-halfs lately. Are we going soft? Or are we just getting lucky and hitting some great breakfasts? I think there’s a lot of great breakfast being cooked in the bay area! Keep slinging that hash, you Barons of Breakfast! If we haven’t met you yet, rest assured … we’re coming!)

J. Christopher’s

Holy Monster Trucks, we’re hungry this morning.

jc-hongree

We visited J. Christopher’s at 14366 N Dale Mabry Hwy on 13 September 2009. This Tampa Bay Breakfast was a recommendation from our TBB Fan Joe. We didn’t realize J. Christopher’s was a chain until we walked in the door. Lucky for us, it seems to be a relatively small chain. They have a web site here: http://www.jchristophers.com/

jc-outside1

Right away we noticed that J. Christopher’s had a polish to it that cried out that it was a chain. Not that there’s anything wrong with polish, but Mom-n-Pops tend to feel slightly less orchestrated. We were greeted at the door by a very nice hostess girl who didn’t really seem to be sure what to make of us. I think Marek was making Gucci Eyes at her behind my back. The interior was nice and open, and there was an interesting and low lunch counter. If it was in front of the kitchen we’d have sat at it, but since it was just against the wall it felt more like an affectation than a real diner counter.

jc-inside

The menu is truly expansive. Being that we started out hungry enough to eat a Monster Truck, this is a Good Thing.

jc-menu

Did we have coffee? Yoooobecha we did, and it was good. The coffee met all the cumulative coffee core criteria. Crikey!

jc-coffee

Get a load of the suspension on this Monster Truck.

jc-coffee2

Marek put in his order. “Oh father, would you be evah so kind as to procure for me this fine day a pancake fine enough to perchance ease the echoing sensation I feel within my vacant belly?”

jc-marek1

And that’s what we did.

jc-breakfast1

And more. The bacon was tasty, but quite missed the mark on Steve’s scale. The eggs were superb and the home fries were nicely done. And they had blueberry pancakes. Now our faithful readers will remember that blueberry pancakes are my favorite. And these had a special twist, “granola crumbles.” They were huge, and simply delicious. A nice twist on an old favorite. (They could have used more actual blueberries, but now I’m just being picky!)

jc-breakfast2

The syrup was warmed up. But more interestingly, they had a local hot sauce. I love hot sauce, and I love it more when it has an 813 area code on the label. It was tasteeee on the eggs!

jc-hot1jc-hot2

When we were done, Marek washed it all down with another dose of high-test go-juice.

jc-coffee3

Marek tried to pay, but he was a little distracted by his trucks. Truuuuuucks! Plus, he’s a little jetlagged from our trip last week, so we’ll cut him the slack for today.

jc-marek-pays

When it’s all said and done, we’ll have to say that this was a superb breakfast. Tasty, immense, and timely. The staff were all exceptionally friendly and professional and didn’t leave us to languish while still appearing to leave us alone to enjoy. There are two marks against this Tampa Bay Breakfast: It’s a chain, which we didn’t realize, and it was off the charts for cost. While we did have a huge serving of a great breakfast, for the two of us plus a tip we needed to call in close air support from Colonel Jackson and his twenny dollar express. That’s a lot of cash for a breakfast. We’ll forgive the expense because it was so good, but we’re still going to dock a half a pancake point for being a chain (yes, we’re biased for the mom-n-pops of Tampa Bay!). If it weren’t a chain we’d have to lay down a 4.5, but we’ll settle for a 4.

We give this Tampa Bay Breakfast a rating of Four Pancakes.

Nicki’s Omelette and Grill

We visited Nicki’s Omelette and Grill at 6805 W Hillsborough Ave on 4 September 2009. This was our first visit to Nicki’s and we’d always thought it was another place with the same name, but it turns out that it’s a small chain with another location on North Dale Mabry.

nickis-outside

The menu was extensive, but also a little expensive. The kids’ menu is a nice touch, especially since it came with crayons!

nickis-menu

Nicki’s is a nice layout with a great lunch counter.

nickis-counter

This was a special Tampa Bay Breakfast as we had the five-star guess reviewer with us … Mom!

nickis-mom

Right away this started out good. Our nice waitress brought Marek a book to read while we were sorting out the menu.

nickis-marek-book

Did we have coffee? You bet your sweet coffee cup we did! And it was pretty good.

nickis-coffee1nickis-coffee2

Check out the suspension on this truck!

nickis-truck

Breakfast came and we were surprised at the size. Despite this being the most expensive breakfast we’ve had, the servings were quite large.

nickis-breakfast1

They had blueberry pancakes! And they were pretty good. The bacon was fine, but not up to Steve’s standards. The eggs were quite nice and a lot, too — must have been big chickens!

nickis-breakfast2

Marek wanted a bit more syrup.

nickis-breakfast3

When we were done, Marek paid the bill. I bet no one could have guessed that he would do that!

nickis-marek-pays1nickis-marek-pays2nickis-marek-pays3

When it was all said and done, we felt that the food was really good but a bit overpriced. The folks were really friendly, but it wasn’t really obvious that folks were regulars or just stopping by (no “howdy Jeb, what’s new, Sue?” that we heard.) We had a nice time, especially with mom.

We’re waffling (get it, “waffling”!) between a 3 and a 3.5. The food was 3.5 but the price was more like 2 and three quarters. Since mom was with us, it was that much better so we’re going to say 3.5. We’re pleased to give Nicki’s Omelette and Grill a 3.5 pancake rating.

West Tampa Sandwich Shop

Today is Tia Sofia’s birthday. Cumpleaños feliz, Tia Sofia! To celebrate, we did a Spanish-speaking Tampa Bay Breakfast today. Hola desayunos!

We visited the West Tampa Sandwich Shop at 3904 N Armenia Ave on 29 August 2009. West Tampa Sandwich Shop also has a web site at http://westtampasandwichshop.com/. We have been to West Tampa Sandwich Shop probably a dozen times, both for breakfast and for lunch. While breakfast is our focus and lunch is usually none of our concern, I’ve got to plug the lunches here. A Cuban sandwich y arroz amarillo con frijoles negros — que bien! But enough about that other meal. Let’s talk about breakfast.

west-outside

This was a special breakfast. We were joined by The Sly Red Fox himself, Diamond Dave.

west-dave-marek

The West Tampa Sandwich Shop is one of our favorite places. It’s always full of hustle and bustle, loud and vigorous, and always welcoming and friendly. Even if it’s your first time here, you’re automatically an old friend.

west-counter

At these classic Tampa Cuban places you don’t get the usual diner coffee that we so enjoy on a usual TBB. As our faithful readers know, the only way to drink coffee is black. The only exception I make for this is for a Cuban breakfast where there’s cafe con leche (or, perhaps, a French breakfast with cafe au lait). And oh baby, is it good!

west-cafee

We got Cuban tostadas.

west-marek

We had fun goofing off.

west-bread

Breakfast came. We had the “West Tampa Special” with pancakes, bacon, eggs, and grits. Marek jumped right in.

west-grits

And Diamond Dave was pleased with what came out of the kitchen.

west-dave

Marek surely likes him some pancakes! He’s a chowhound!

west-marek-pancakes

When we were done, Marek paid the bill.

west-marekpays11

He got a little lost along the way.

west-marekpays2

Somehow he ended up helping one of the staff deliver a breakfast to another table.

west-marek-helps

He worked enough that I think he may have ended up filling out an application for a real job. He could do worse than working in a great place like this.

west-marek-helps2

Marek made good friends and handed out a lot of kisses.

west-marek-friends1

We had a great breakfast and a fun time all around. Diamond Dave had a great time, and we really enjoyed having him as a guest reviewer.

west-group

After it’s all said and done, you can’t ask for much better in Tampa than the West Tampa Sandwich Shop. The food is consistently delicious, the people are warm and inviting, and the atmosphere is simply fun. We are pleased to give West Tampa Sandwich Shop a 4.5 pancake rating.

Lenoce’s Family Restaurant

We visited Lenoce’s Family Restaurant at 13949 W. Hillsborough on 22 August 2009. This was our first visit to Lenoce’s. We found it because it’s pretty close to the Oldsmar Flea Market, which is a favorite weekend destination for us. This was our first visit to Lenoce’s. (The “Best Breakfast and Lunch in Town” sign was a draw … we like Breakfast!)

lenoce-outside

We got ourselves ready. You’ve got to look groovy-cool to be a contributor to TBB.

andy-marek

The first thing we noticed was Lenoce’s lunch counter. We’ve never seen one so low. If there had been a little more room when we walked in we would have tried it, but I was afraid that someone might get a dump truck in the coffee so we played it safe.

lenoce-counter

Second thing we discovered was a plethora of pancake possibilities, including my personal favorite, blueberry. The morning is shaping up nicely…

lenoce-menu

We had coffee. Check out these great coffee cups! And the coffee was hot, black, and bitter. Tasty the way I like it!

lenoce-coffee

Alas, despite my best efforts to prevent it, someone’s coffee ended up with a dump truck in it. Luckily it was Marek’s coffee and he likes it that way. He’s hardcore on his coffee.

lenoce-coffee-marek

We had breakfast. I had a quick reaction that the pancakes were sort of smallish. Not so small that you’d expect to find the cook using an Easy Bake Oven or something like that, they just seemed small. The bacon was good, and I think Steve from Yankeetown would have approved. The eggs were also good.

lenoce-breakfast1

Marek dug right in. He liked this pancake just fine.

lenoce-breakfast2

Here’s where we started getting into a little bit of a problem. While Marek was delving in with gusto, I was thinking that my blueberry pancakes were sort of average. They didn’t pack the blueberry punch that you find at Skyway Jacks or Taste of Boston. They were fine, but I wasn’t nearly as keen on mine as Marek was on his.

lenoce-breakfast3

We encountered another problem as we started getting to the bottom of our pancakes. This one was a bit worse. The dining room was mostly empty. And so was the coffee. While Black and Bitter, this cup was far from Bountiful or Bottomless.

lenoce-coffee-empty

An odd thing about Lenoce’s was that it was quiet. Funeral quiet. Church quiet. Taking the SAT quiet. People whispering to each other quiet. Marek was playing a little game where he’d “accidentally” roll Roary off the table and then make a big production of getting down from the chair, picking it up, and hauling himself back on the chair. The room was so quiet that it sounded like he was hurling monkeys in a library. This was odd because it was obvious that everyone knew each other and were regulars (“Hi Tom.” “Howdy Betty.” And the like.)

lenoce-marek-cars1

When we were done Marek paid the bill. I had to confiscate Roary so he would focus and do his part of the job (my part’s coming up with the cash, his is delivering it!).

lenoce-marek-pays1

He paid and brought back the change. The folks at the next table over said (in a quiet voice) how he brought back the change but that won’t last long! I agree. In about five years I’ll start getting some sort of overhead charge levied from Marek when he does this.

lenoce-marek-pays2

He made friends, as he tends to do.

lenoce-marek-friends

And he really liked this nice lady. Though I can’t account for the direction of his gaze in this particular picture.

lenoce-marek-friends2

At the end of our time we did not go away hungry, but we did think the tab of $13.35 was a bit high for the smallish pancakes. Aside from the blueberry aspect, it’s not hard to find the same general quantity and quality around here for around half the price (the Ranch House just up the road has 2 pancakes/2 eggs/2 bacon for $3.99). The people were friendly, everyone was a regular, Marek was quite comfortable and ate a lot, and overall it wasn’t a bad experience, maybe a 3.5 rating. I’m docking a half a pancake point for the coffee — as our loyal readers know, the bottom of the coffee cup is a thing no Pancake Professional ever wants to see!

We give Lenoce’s Family Restaurant a three-pancake rating.

Revisit to Mamas on North Florida

We revisited Mamas on North Florida on 15 August 2009. Our first official visit was on 18 April 2009, but we’ve been here many times.

mamas-1

We really came back because we haven’t seen Vicky since April. We love Vicky.

mamas-vicky

Marek was happy as a clam to be in a familiar place after all the months of vigorous Tampa Bay Breakfast reviews.

mamas-happy

We weren’t 100% sure, but if you look in the far right corner, I think that’s Santa having breakfast.

mamas-santa

Marek got to color before we had pancakes.

mamas-color

When we were done coloring we had some of the best pancakes in Tampa.

mamas-breakfast

I asked Marek if he liked the pancakes. “Well, DUH, dad.”

mamas-duh

The whole breakfast was just perfect. And the coffee was bulletproof black, belligerent bitter, bountifully bottomless, best basic beverage. Just the way I like it.

mamas-amdy-marek

When we were done, Marek paid the bill as he is fond of doing. Note the “pop” in his hand!

mamas-pays1mamas-pays2mamas-pays3

Vicky took a stack of our cards and put them on the counter. That is soooo coool! The first time anyone’s done this, that we know of, anyway.

mamas-cards

When we were done, Marek hollered out “adios!” and we went home.

mamas-adios

We’re delighted to verify the 4.5 pancake rating Mamas was given in April. (Slip some blueberries in the pancakes like Skyway Jack’s, Taste of Boston, or Grandma in Inglis and we’ll bump to five!) Thanks, Vicky, for a great breakfast!

Taste of Boston on Interbay

We visited the Taste of Boston at 5314 Interbay Blvd on 1 August 2009. Taste of Boston also has a web site at http://www.tasteofboston.net/. This was our first visit to this nice little breakfast in Ballast Park. This breakfast was recommended by Colonel Mike at CENTCOM.

ballast-outside1

It’s not a great picture, but if you look closely you’ll see two doors. On the left is the restaurant. On the right is the bait shop. It looked to me like they shared a common kitchen. Hmmm.

Our readers know that we always look for unique and special things about a Tampa Bay Breakfast. Before we even got in the door, we took stock of the lovely, lovely view …

ballast-view2

… and the fact that there’s a ginormous great playground right out back.

ballast-outside2

This playground had … a race car!

ballast-play1

So we finally finished driving the race car and went in for breakfast. You order at the counter and pay first, which is fine. Check out what’s on the menu … blueberry pancakes!

ballast-menu

Marek paid the bill when we ordered.

ballast-marek-pays

And then we saw that Taste of Boston just kept on hitting the high marks. They had one of Marek’s favorite things, a fish tank!

ballast-marek-lobsters

It was full of lobsters, but hey, he’s two, and there’s no correcting him that they’re not fisheeees.

We had coffee and it was good.

ballast-coffee1

As some of our dedicated readers have learned, coffee is actually delicious with salt and pepper.

ballast-coffee-pepperballast-coffee-pepper-saltballast-coffee-pepper-salt-yum

And we had breakfast. And wow, were we pleasantly pleased with what came out.

ballast-breakfast1

Gosh-darned good blueberry pancakes! And Marek liked his pancake, too. The bacon was OK — not up to the standards set out by friend Steve from Yankeetown, but passable. The scrambled eggs were also average. But these were good pancakes! Marek said they were so good, he felt like a movie star.

ballast-marek-shades

When we were done they gave us coupons for our next visit! That’s a nice touch!

ballast-coupons

Finally, Marek was ready to go.

ballast-marek-home

And away we went, back home to tell Mom all about it!

ballast-marek-home2

This was a very fun Tampa Bay Breakfast. There was a playground, a great view, a pier, a bait shop, and a fish tank full of lobsters. The customers were friendly and seemed to be a mix of regulars and new folks. The staff was cheerful and attentive. The prices were average, but the Pancakes were just great.

We’re pleased to give this Tampa Bay Breakfast a four-pancake rating.

Mamas on South Dale Mabry

We visited Mamas Kitchen at 5524 S Dale Mabry Hwy on 26 July 2009. Mamas also has a location on North Florida, which was the first breakfast we ever officially reviewed. Both locations make a good breakfast at a reasonable price and the people are always very friendly. Marek and I visit the Florida Avenue location regularly. I visit the South Dale Mabry location frequently for breakfast with my colleagues from work. It seems like everyone in Mamas is a regular. You just can’t help but feel at home here.

mamas-outside2

You notice right away that Mamas is special. Two things stand out before you even get in the door. The benches outside:

mamas-outside3

And the “facilities” are located outside for some reason:

mamas-latrines

We had breakfast. The bacon was the way Steve from Yankeetown likes it. The pancakes were perfect, or at least as perfect as can be given that they weren’t blueberry pancakes. And the eggs were just right.

mamas-breakfast

While you’re having breakfast at Mamas you get a chance to enjoy the interior decorating, which includes the Terrorist Body Bag.

mamas-bodybag

Sorry, could you repeat the question? What, coffee? Oh yes, and we had coffee.

mamas-coffee1

The coffee was strong, black, and bitter, just the way diner coffee should be.

mamas-coffee2

Mamas also has a great lion mural. Note the neat touch of how they painted over the air conditioner.

mamas-mural2

Mamas is really close to Macdill AFB and the military influence pervades.

mamas-military

When we were done, Marek offered to pay.

mamas-marek-pays1

He had no problem finding the right place.

mamas-marek-pays2

And then the Best News Ever, he found what was in the bottom drawer under the register.

mamas-marek-pop1

With a pop in hand, Marek went away the happiest boy ever.

Great food, great atmosphere, friendly and regular people, interesting decor, and a pop at the end. This is a great breakfast and we’re always happy to visit Mamas at either location. We’re pleased to give this Tampa Bay Breakfast a rating of 4.5 pancakes.

La Teresita Restaurant

We visited La Teresita Restaurant at 3246 W Columbus Dr on 20 July 2009. La Teresita has a web site at http://www.lateresitarestaurant.com. We’ve been to La Teresita a bunch of times for lunch, but this was our first time for breakfast. I mean “desayunos!”

This was a special Tampa Bay Breakfast as we had our favorite person ever join us … Mom!

La Teresita is one of the best-known Cuban restaurants in Tampa and is considered a must on the Tampa Tour for out-of-town visitors. It’s a vibrant, bustling, exciting place and the prices are as low as the food is good. And it’s almost all lunch counter, which we think is pretty neat. Everyone, on both sides of the counter, is very friendly and welcoming. You get the feeling that folks have been coming here and sitting on the same stool for 30 years. That’s a good place.

Before we go any further, I’ll have to let you know about our morning challenges. Marek was being two years old, hollering and throwing cars around and generally not being interested in breakfast. We made the best of it but I’ll admit that I considered selling him to the La Teresita staff for the price of a cafe con leche.

The menu is a bit limited for desayunos. No pancakes listed, but when we asked they were very happy to make us some.

So we had pancakes. And while they were small, they were remarkably good. Nice and crispy on the edges.

And Mom had a tasty omelet made in a unique way, sort of like a frittata.

I had the scrambled eggs and bacon, and our breakfasts came with tostadas, which was a unique Cuban touch to this breakfast.

Marek proceeded to mostly ignore breakfast and alternate between playing cars and wondering if someone would save him from Dad.

Usually Marek pays the bill, but today he just wasn’t interested. So I took the opportunity to slip in an extra coffee at the end, and ordered un presso when I paid. Now that’s good coffee!

We had a nice time with some incredibly friendly people who enjoyed speaking Spanish to Marek. We had some tasty and unique food in a classic Tampa landmark. Aside from the fact that Marek woke up on the wrong side of Toddlerville this morning and caused chaos for all, it was a breakfast well worth repeating. Oh, and the three of us had breakfast for ten bucks and change. That’s a value!

We’re pleased to give La Teresita a Tampa Bay Breakfasts rating of three and a half pancakes.
