Breakfasts

Lenny’s Restaurant

We visited Lenny’s at 21220 Us Highway 19 N in Clearwater on 6 March 2010. Lenny’s was recommended to us by our old friend and Tampa Bay Breakfast alum, Jeff. This was our first visit.

lennys-outside

Lenny’s is clearly a Baseball Place. A Phillies place. I was in Little League in the early 80s. That’s the extent of my baseball knowledge. Oh, also, I do know that “ball” in Spanish is “pelota.”

lennys-phillies

So we’re not reaaaallllly baseball kids, Marek and I. But we ARE hometown kids. Which means that given the choice we love the Rays, the Bucs, and the Bolts. And we pay jusssttt enough attention to baseball to know that last year the Phillies were really rude to Rays fans during the World Series. We’re keeping an open mind, but first we’re going to try out these awesome bleacher seats.

lennys-outside3

Marek says, “come ON, Homer, less cornball more pancake!”

lennys-outside4

Inside is crowded. That’s a good sign. We can’t imagine this many people showing up for pukecakes and ickybacon. Everyone’s very friendly and welcoming. We get a booth right away. See the baseball bats on the ceiling?

lennys-inside3

Immediately we realize that we’ve sat in the dangerous Dune Buggy Zone. Watch Out! Dune Buggies! Run!

lennys-cars

Marek gets it under control right away. Then he starts just whipping these cars around at Maximum Dune Buggy Speed, which is not exactly NASCAR speed, but it’s still way too fast for the breakfast track.

lennys-cars2

Lucky for all the innocent bystanders, the cops showed up. German cops, in fact.

lennys-polizei

All this, and we haven’t even looked at the menu. What a day, and it’s only 0830. Check out the Redneck Benedict. Now think about this from a breakfast science point of view. Can you REALLY go wrong in a place that has “Redneck Benedict” on the menu?

Really, now, can you?

Well. Probably.

lennys-menu1

But when you flip the page and find all these fine breakfasts named after lovely ladies from decades past, you realize then that this is a Good Place. Any breakfast joint that loves breakfast enough to name it “Lorraine” is OK by us.

lennys-menu2

Right away they brought us the “complimentary Danish basket.” Now I tell you, this almost threw off our mojo. We came here to sample the pancakes, but we could have just fell into this basket, had a cuppa Joe and left full. These were good Danishes! Marek pulled a snatchy-grabby on one before the basket hit the table.

lennys-danish

And the good news kept rolling in. Here comes coffee!

lennys-marek-coffee1

Boldly Black. This is good, standard diner swill. Just the way we like it. And it didn’t stay empty long, which is also the way we like it.

lennys-coffee

We start talking sports and breakfast. You know, the kinds of things all fathers and sons discuss. Marek says, hey old man, if you took the Rays and the Phillies and gave them all dune buggies and told them to race from here to Thonotosassa, who do you think would win? I answered calmly, with the gravitas that comes with age and experience. Clearly, the Tampa buggy team would win. While Philly folk may beat us on being rude, the concept of Road Rage was invented in Tampa. We agreed. Cheers!

lennys-marek-coffee2

Since we were having a Serious Baseball Discussion in what is obviously a Serious Baseball Place, we tried to play the part by getting in each other’s faces about abstract statistics of players who died in 1926. If only we had beer to throw at each other!

lennys-heated-debate

Lucky for me, breakfast came. Marek was starting to get a little upset that I thought the ‘74 Oakland A’s would have made lousy dune buggy racers. Notice the bacon heist in progress. Where’s the Polizei when you need them?!

lennys-breakfast1

As you may have figured out by now, dear reader, Marek is not adverse to a little bacon with his pancakes. What is not obvious here is that I also am not adverse to a little bacon with my pancakes. But I seem to have lost all the bacon when I was busy fiddling with taking a picture. That, loyal TBB fans, is the price that I pay for you every weekend. We at Tampa Bay Breakfasts are about service and sacrifice.

lennys-breakfast21

Marek gave that bacon the Houdini treatment and jumped into some pancakes.

lennys-breakfast4

Can you tell by looking at these pictures that the pancakes need something? What do you think it is? Butter? Syrup? Fruit? Chocolate chips?

If you thought any of those, you’d be just wrong. Clearly, preposterously wrong. These pancakes need pepper.

What? Don’t look at ME. It wasn’t MY idea. I’m not going to eat that.

lennys-breakfast-pepper

But sure enough, Marek digs right in. I think he gets that from his mother’s side.

lennys-breakfast-bigbite

The bacon, what I was able to smell, anyway, was really good. Not Steve-crisp, but still pretty good. The eggs were a little runnier than I really love, but they were still very tasty. The pancakes were yummy but kind of small. This stack makes up for a lack of girth by being tall, but still they’re sort of smallish. Dune buggy added to show scale.

lennys-breakfast-small-pancakes

When we were done with breakfast, we took some quality time to goof off. Or perhaps I could be whispering in his ear to behave or I’ll spank you back to last Tuesday. Or maybe just a little bit of both.

And I might be wrong here, but I’m pretty sure that I am the only person to ever review a breakfast in the Tampa Bay area while wearing a t-shirt with a Djibouti flag on it. Trend-setting, the Tampa Bay Breakfast way. That’s what sets us apart from those other guys.

lennys-goof-off

Marek decided he would pay the bill. He took the money and the check and disappeared. I mean really disappeared. He got caught up in a crowd of baseball fans and swept away to the other part of the restaurant. I figured I’d just wait it out. He’s a highly trained and experienced Pancake Professional. He’ll find his way.

lennys-marek-pays

And he did. Five minutes later he comes back around and hands me the bill and the money. I don’t work here, junior! But we took care of the bill together. Breakfast for two, just under 14 Yen. Not cheap. Good chow and we didn’t feel ripped off, but we did agree that this was not a cost-effective breakfast.

lennys-bill

On our way out the door we got jammed up by a crowd pushing in. So we looked at the postcard rack by the register. As our dedicated Tampa Bay Breakfast fans know well, Marek’s middle name is Inglis. Inglis happens to be where you would find Follow That Dream Parkway. Half a pancake point bump to Lenny’s for this nice little tie-in with home.

lennys-follow-that-dream

We left happy and full. Still arguing about the cross-over sport of baseball dune buggy racing, but at least breakfast was behind us!

lennys-hungry

Then we get to the car and Marek asks for an apple. So I gave the kid an apple.

lennys-apple

We had a great time at Lenny’s. Great breakfast, though not very cheap, quality and endless coffee, danishes. Friendly people, full of regulars, and lots of unique flair. While we’re not “baseball people” we are breakfast people, and so is Lenny’s. We’re pleased to give Lenny’s a Tampa Bay Breakfast rating of four and a half pancakes.

one-pancakeone-pancake1one-pancake2one-pancake3half-pancake

Later that night we went and saw the Bolts win one. We haven’t heard the horn blow that many times all year! Marek spent the game hollering “Go Tampa!” while his mom was hollering “Fight, fight! Take the gloves off!” Crazy kids.

L’Eden Cafe

I got up this morning and found Marek hard at work. He says, dad, this Tampa Bay Breakfast thing is going nowhere if we don’t put in some overtime getting it done and done right. I’m just trying to help you out, Slo-Mo. I asked, where are we going this morning, ma jeune petit garcon?

eden-office1

Well, what do you think about THAT. Lad’s not even three and he’s taken over my laptop and set up office at the dining room table. It was early and I wasn’t all the way woken up yet, so I was, I’ll admit, feeling put out to pasture. Then I figured out what Marek was REALLY doing. Instant messaging with Grandma and watching Clifford cartoons, just like I do at work all day. He pointed out that he’d already done his homework and suggested we should go to France!

eden-office2

We had to go downtown to find a taste of Paris.

eden-andy-marek

We don’t have the Eiffel Tower, but we do have an enormous “beer can” building that is every bit as awesome.

marek-beercan

(In case you were wondering, this is a view from the top.)

paris

We visited L’Eden Cafe at 500 N Tampa St on 20 February 2010. This was our first ever visit to L’Eden, though we have visited the Samaria Cafe next door and loved it. And of course, we just love being downtown!

eden-outside

Marek was full of talk. We walked in and he grabbed a table by the window. Bonjour, he says to the gentleman in the chef’s uniform. Serious. I don’t know where he picks this stuff up.

eden-marek

We both grabbed a menu and perused. No pancakes. But there’s some great tastes listed here, including the expected petit déjeuner avec cafe noir. And the croissants and pains on the counter were exquisitely fresh and tasty looking. I went for the coffee and Marek for the jus d’orange.

eden-menu

While we waited Marek says, hey speed freak, what do you think about re-enacting the 24 hours of Le Mans? I said, well, we won’t be here for 24 hours, but sure, let’s do some time trials. I said “un, deux…” and Marek hollered, “trois!”

eden-le-mans

Then Marek got some juice. He says, “merci bien, papa!” Now he’s just trying to impress the girls that walked in while we were sitting there.

eden-jus

I had a little bit of coffee. Now let me tell you something, ami, this is some very fine coffee. A bit more delicate, perhaps, than the harsh diner acid we usually drink, but no less strong. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

eden-cafe

While we waited, Marek and I started a serious discussion. First I asked him if he knew that Rilke also wrote poetry in French as well as German? While his most famous and intricate works were in German, he was no slouch in French. This pleasant conversation meandered into politics. I said that President Sarkozy is great, but I’m sure he’s not nearly the poet Rilke was, in any language. Marek got a bit upset as he is a staunch supporter of M. Sarkozy and his economic policies. He really took it personally. Gosh, kid, I didn’t realize you felt so strongly about Sarko.

eden-marek-grump

Then here came some petit déjeuner! This is the savory croissant with ham, eggs, and cheese, along with some fresh fruit. And it was delicious!

eden-breakfast

Marek went “yoink!” on the fruit bowl. I suggested to him that “yoink!” is not actually French. It’s not actually anything.

eden-fruit

When we were done we paid the bill. About 17 Francs for all this plus un pain au chocolat to go for mom. Not exactly cheap, but what L’Eden loses in cost effectiveness it more than makes up for in deliciousness and ambiance.

eden-bill

Marek got a tour of the facility, including the lovely little courtyard in the back. He was still sore with me for the Sarko vs Rilke talk (though I WILL admit that Sarko would take Rilke easily in a WWF suspended cage match, as Rilke was sort of a pansy), so he was happy to just trot off away with a fellow Frenchman.

eden-tour

While Marek was gone I sat and daydreamed about a motorcycle ride I took through France years ago. Ahh, c’est bon.

trip2

I don’t usually override Marek on the ratings, but I’m going to today. Marek had pancakes on the brain and really wasn’t very interested in eating anything else. But our visit to L’Eden evoked a lot of fond memories for me from some years ago when I worked for a company in Paris. The people at L’Eden were both friendly and French. The food was lovely. The coffee was simply great. The location was downtown cool. And they played some nice French music in the background. I’m rolling out the four and a half pancake rating for this great Tampa Bay Breakfast.

one-pancakeone-pancake1one-pancake2one-pancake3half-pancake

After breakfast, Marek and I went to visit the new Curtis Hixon park. If you haven’t been, you are missing a really nice park. This urban public space made Tampa feel like a real city!

park1

There’s a great slide, too!

park5

This shifty-looking character was sitting on a park bench.

park-andy

The park has the latest in playground features, the “Little Bartender.”

park-bartender-junior

And there’s a great dog park. That’s not Marek’s dog, by the way. We were probably in violation of some city ordinance by going to the dog park to play with other peoples’ dogs.

park-dog2

What a fine morning. Merci, L’Eden, for starting us out right.

Inglis/Yankeetown Lions Club Pancake Breakfast

It’s Valentine’s Day! What did YOU do for your true loves? Did you consider breakfast as one of the best, most appreciated, and cost-effective ways to say “Baby, I loves you like pancakes!”? I surely did. Me and Marek, we took mom to the Inglis/Yankeetown Lions Club Pancake Breakfast at the Lion’s Club at 22 59th St. in Yankeetown.

lions-pancake-copy

We saw the sign on the highway: “Pancake Breakfast $5” It’s a sign worth following!

lions-sign

When we got to the front, we were greeted with good news! There’s pancakes behind THIS door!

lions-door

Here’s something cool. Marek and I walked in the door and the nice lady says, out of the blue, “Are you Andy?” I says back, “Why yes ma’am, I am.” She says, “Is that Baby Inglis?” I says, “Yes ma’am, he is.” She says to us “Your breakfast is already taken care of. Come on in!” Wow. That is the first time we’ve ever been told when we walked in the door that breakfast was complimentary. We felt like celebrities! We got ready for a great breakfast with the Lions! (Marek’s middle name is Inglis, for our readers who are just tuning in. Around south Levy County that’s his nickname. I’m sure he’ll truly hate it when he’s ten, but for the moment he’s only two so he doesn’t get a say in the situation.)

lions-inside

We were in for a real treat this morning. Grandma and Grandpaw joined us for breakfast!

lions-mom-dad

Our favorite guest reviewer, Mom, joined us too.

lions-marek-mom

And here comes breakfast! This is one of the finest breakfasts you’ll find in Yankeetown, the tri-county-area, or even in our whole Tampa Bay Breakfasts territory. I’ve got nothing but good to say about any of this most excellent chow! Even the coffee was exactly the way I like it, black as the tannin-stained water of the Withlacoochee River.

lions-andy

When we were done we went back in the kitchen to thank our Breakfast Benefactor and Yankeetown Vice Mayor Doug for the great breakfast. Also in the back is our friend, Yankeetown Councilman and I/Y Lions Club president Larry. Thanks, guys, and to all the Lions, for the invitation and a great breakfast!

lions-marek-thanks

While we were hanging out in the kitchen, we also ran into Levy County Commissioner Marsha! For the record, Marsha still owes me a pie.

lions-marsha

Marek says, dad, where’s Yankeetown Mayor Dawn-Marie? I want to show her how I can try to do backflips in your arms while you’re trying to talk! Over here, son. Show her your squirmy best.

lions-dawn

When it was all said and done, me and Marek, A.K.A. Baby Inglis, met lots of our Yankeetown friends and we had a superb breakfast with our first five-pancake review of 2010! We’d like to thank the Lion’s Club for inviting us and for putting on such a fine Valentine’s Day breakfast.

lions-andy-marek

We’re pleased to award The Inglis/Yankeetown Lions Club Valentine’s Day Pancake Breakfast with a Tampa Bay Breakfasts rating of five pancakes!

one-pancakeone-pancake1one-pancake2one-pancake3one-pancake3

A few notes about today’s breakfast. First, did you catch my fabulous “University of Inglis” shirt? The Fighting Devils! Folks are probably starting to forget the fun we had a few years back with our Satan Issue. Also, I wanted to wear an Inglis shirt both in honor of my main man Marek “Baby Inglis” but also in small protest against this foolishness.

Here’s something that most folks probably don’t know. 15 years ago today I “popped the question” to Baby Inglis’s mom, at sunset on a rickety old dock in Cedar Key. We got married in Yankeetown 15 years ago on July 4th and had our wedding reception right here in this Lions Club clubhouse. Now how’s THAT for Valentine’s Day romance?

lions-andy-heather

And here’s what the same spot looked like 14 1/2 years ago. Check out our red, white, and blue theme (and my particular shade of blue).

wedding

Marek went home with Grandma and Grandpaw while our Favorite Guest Reviewer and I rolled up to Cedar Key to recreate the moment. There’s the dock behind her where the proposal Deed was Done.

v-heather-cold

And the spot of our first meal as fiancees. Sadly, it was closed. We’ve actually never caught it open since we ate there on Valentine’s in 1995, which is a real bummer.

v-always-closed

But when we DID have supper there on the proposal night, the prospective groom did not actually have any money. I had to leave my lovely bride as collateral while I ran to the island’s only (at the time) ATM to pay our bill. If my account had been empty, Heather would have become the property of the Cook’s Kitchen restaurant and we’d not have Marek and our 15 years of true love. For your entertainment, here’s a recreation.

v-proposal-atm

Now those are some great Valentine’s Days! Both in 1995 and 2010! (Oh, and also all the others in between were groovy, too!)

Tick Tock

We got in the car. Marek was still dreaming. “Mmmmm. Pancakes, Dad. I need pancakes.” Okie-dokie, bubba!

tick-marek-dreaming

We visited the Tick Tock restaurant at 8123 Fourth St. N, St. Petersburg on 13 February 2010. This was our first visit to the Tick Tock.

tick-outside

We liked it extra good before we even went in. Check out those motorcycles! Oh, and also, the tagline, “Tick Tock, It’s Time to Eat!” Now really, how can this place not be great?

tick-motorcycles

Inside was very clean and orderly. New-ish looking, even. We were greeted by several folks and it was just all-round friendly. A nice first impression!

tick-inside

So the whole way over, Marek is saying, oh dad, don’t you just love cars? I say why yes, Marek, I DO love cars. But what about … RACE cars? Yes, dad, I love race cars too. I don’t know where he got it, but the little nugget pulls out this month’s Hot Rod magazine. Notice that he’s got a page open with hot cars and a hot girl; like most guys, he pretty much had to flip a coin on which one to look at, and he settled on the cars.

tick-magazine2

Looking at that magazine really got us in the mood. For RACING! Whooo! Go Blue!

tick-cars

Between heats, we looked at the menu. This says blueberry pancakes, but what it really is is pancakes with blueberry gunk on the top. I just don’t like that at all. So I got the regular pancakes. Had I known how large they’d be I’d have not gotten Marek his own, but I was still remembering our small pancake experiences from the last few weeks. Better having too many pancakes than too few, I always say!

tick-menu

The Marek, who is still waking up, says hey old timer, you going to come off of any of that coffee or am I going to have to teach you a lesson? Duly chastised, I came off of some of that coffee and we both enjoyed it. We even said “cheers!”

tick-marek-coffee2

Marek has been off the coffee for a few months, as our dedicated followers may have noticed. But boy, did he like it today! Deelish! And let me tell you something, this coffee cup was never more than half empty. The Tick Tock has a serious coffee pipeline going on, with every gal working in there doing a sweep of every table every five minutes. This was awesome!

tick-marek-coffee3

Here comes …. breakfast! Check out this ginormous “Mickey Pancake,” for which I’m hoping Disney does not actually get any royalties for the name. Marek “Gimme some Bacon” promptly did his slice-of-bacon-grab. Steve probably would not have cared for this bacon, but we’ve had much worse in our travels.

tick-breakfast1

And look at this heap of pancakes. Holy moly, if I’d known this I’d have skipped supper last night! These were seriously good pancakes and I was very sad that I’d not brought an appetite appropriate for their demise. First Marek beats me in arm wrestling two out of three, then these pancakes put me in the hurt station. Top-notch, in the same category as The Dome’s pancakes, I’d have to say. The eggs, on the other hand, were pretty good but somehow were runny inside and I didn’t care for that at all.

tick-breakfast2

Nothing stopped Marek. He was cheerfully humming Mr. Plow as he dug in.

tick-breakfast4

When we were done we played more cars, read more magazines, and waited for the bill. Not the cheapest we’ve ever had, but not terrible for two breakfasts for just over 11 clams.

tick-bill

Marek paid the bill. Which was a bit of drama as he kept getting lost, dropping his money, and all around goofing off. Come on, kid, act your age! Oh wait, you’re two. OK, you’re doing pretty good.

tick-marek-pays1

While Marek was off trying to pay all the wrong people, I was busy stashing our cards in strategic locations. We’re on our second box of business cards and entering our second year of breakfasts. That’s a lot of pancakes, brother!

tick-cards

On our way out the door we had a frank, serious discussion about the Tick Tock. Did you love it, Marek? Yes, dad. Do you love your dad, Marek? Yes dad. Good, ’cause I love you, too. Now give your old man a kiss. OK, Dad. But only if we can go to the drag strip after this.

tick-love

We rolled out of here full as can be. Folks were supremely friendly. The coffee was bottomless and bitter. The price was fine, but not great. Overall it’s just a good, solid breakfast experience that we’re looking forward to visiting again. We’re pleased to give this Tampa Bay Breakfast a four pancake rating.

one-pancakeone-pancake1one-pancake2one-pancake3

When we left we went cruising to the Sunshine Drag Strip to check it out. On the road to the track were these cool old jalopies.

tick-neat-cars

And we were able to pull up onto the strip to take a picture. See Marek tucked in the back?

tick-dragstrip

The whole ride home (it’s a long way from our house to St. Pete), Marek kept saying, “look at me, daddy, LOOK AT ME!” Whudda goofball.

tick-look-at-me

Before we got home, he asked if we had any apples. Sure enough, I did. That apple is the same size as Marek’s head! Look at that! What a great morning for little Marek!

tick-apple1

The Gold Ring

It’s a special double-header weekend! Marek and I had the day off so we went and had breakfast again. We went to The Gold Ring at 2510 N. Tampa Street. This was our first visit to The Gold Ring. They have a web site at http://goldringcafe.com/. I drive by The Gold Ring on the way to work every morning and it looked like a warm, homey, greasy spoon diner. It does not look like any picture you will find on their web site!

gold-outside

Inside is just a small little diner that seems to mostly cater to take-out. The menu is on the overhead and is pretty short and straightforward. Eggs. Toast. Hashbrowns. Grits. Bacon. Sandwiches. Coffee. Looks like some Cuban influence. Sort of Havana meets Down-South. The menu actually reminded me of the kind of truck-stop diner I used to favor when I was a lot younger and used to drive between Nashville and Inglis or Biloxi and Ocala all the time.

gold-menu

While I was looking at the menu, Marek grabbed a seat and pulled out some cars. He had two special cars, a “Race Car, dada” and a “it’s Green Car!” These two cars saw a lot of action both on and off the table-top.

gold-marek1

We took a look around while we waited. Just a small diner, looks like it’s been here for at least three decades (the web site says they’ve been catering for 30 years, so there you go!).

gold-inside

We played more cars! There was a steady stream of customers, almost all of whom were getting take-out. While they waited they watched us. Most of the folks waiting started out sort of grim-looking. But after just a few minutes of watching Marek work his magic with race cars they warmed up. Marek got quite a few waves and hand-shakes by the time we were done!

gold-marek2

Then breakfast came! You know how we feel about breakfast! Marek had pretty much all the bacon and a little toast. I had the eggs and hashbrowns and rest of the toast. It was a pretty filling meal, though the eggs were a little runnier than I personally care for. Marek chowed down on that bacon, though. He’s got a new passion.

gold-breakfast

Marek asked for orange juice. He got hooked up just right.

gold-juice

I had the large coffee. I had a choice of American or Cuban. I went with the Cuban and I was not disappointed. This was really delicious coffee. This alone is worth the stop. As you can see, even Marek liked it and he’s been off his coffee kick for months now. Some new-age diet of his, I think. You know how kids are these days, with their all-bacon/no-caffeine diets.

gold-coffee

So here’s something interesting. The bill was $7.25, which I thought was pretty reasonable for a good-sized breakfast and a great coffee and a juice. I stuffed the two dollars in the tip jar at the counter and kept the three quarters. Whenever I get a pocket of change I always look for bicentennial quarters because I think they’re neat. So I look at these three quarters and notice that the dates on them are 1966, 1967, and 1980. They gave me three coins and one of them is 30 years old and the other two are over 40 years old. How odd is that?

gold-change

When we were done we walked outside, after saying goodbye and adios to everyone. Marek had a new group of fans! We stopped to take a picture together because, honestly, we’d forgotten to take one inside!

gold-bye

The Gold Ring is really more of a take-out joint than a sit-in diner, which is sort of at the edge of the kind of breakfasts we tend to review (Especially since they don’t have pancakes!). The web site certainly counts as the “unique factor,” that and this corner is the only place in Tampa where I have ever actually heard gunfire. The price is reasonable and the place is full of regulars who don’t start out overly friendly but still end up that way. The food is pretty good, but the coffee is really excellent. We give The Gold Ring a Tampa Bay Breakfasts three-pancake rating.

La Pelota

We started the morning feeling very adventurous! Let’s try something new! So we went to the Honduran Cafe at 0830 (opening hours on Sunday: 0830) and there wasn’t a sign of life at all. OK, maybe they’re running behind. Let’s try the Viet Asian breakfast we drove by last week on Waters. They don’t open until 1000 during the week and 1100 on the weekends. That’s LUNCH, man! So now we’ve got this odd opinion that Vietnamese folks don’t eat breakfast (and that Hondurans sleep late on Sundays). In order to get a second opinion, we decided to try the An Luc Vietnamese market and cafe on Armenia. While they were open, it turns out they’re under new management and not quiet ready to serve food yet. This morning’s desire for adventure is not resulting in actual breakfast for us yet.

viet-breakfastviet-armenia

Yesterday our neighbors stopped us to say they just had breakfast at La Pelota. “It’s a bar, with breakfast!” So Marek says to me, dad, after all this running around chasing Honduran and Vietnamese breakfasts, let’s go to the bar. I need a drink. So we took Matt’s advice and tried La Pelota at 701 West Waters Avenue. This was our first visit to La Pelota. Our next visit will probably be for liquid lunch.

pelota-outside1

Here’s a great picture of Marek’s eyeball. You could cut class with that blue.

pelota-outside2

We went inside. Sure enough, it’s a bar. Looks like a good bar, too. We appeared to be the only breakfast customers the whole time we were there.

pelota-inside

Our very pleasant waitress brought us the menu. We asked for heuvos revueltos. We’re in a bar named “La Pelota” so surely everyone speaks Spanish! Turns out everyone did, except her. We found out her secret within moments of walking in the door! She was the high point of the breakfast, I’ll say right up front. Very sweet and sweet on Marek, too. He is loved by Tampa’s ladies, that’s for sure!

pelota-menu

I’m not sure about the Swizz …

pelota-menu-swizz

While we waited for desayunos, we played cars!

pelota-marek

We got un bessito! (Look at Marek eyeballing the camera!)

pelota-bessito

We had a serious discussion about the table. This is cool, Come, Bebe, Baila (I have no idea what Goza means, though if it follows eat, drink, dance, it’s got to be good!).

pelota-table

And we had a nice cafe con leche! This was very yummy. We actually had two. And Marek had chocolate milk, which was sort of new for him.

pelota-cafe

And then … breakfast came! Like a curveball thrown by Alfredo Aceves.

pelota-breakfast

Marek did a quick snatch on the bacon, which was cooked the way both Steve and Marek like it. And then he dug right in to the pancakes. When our nice waitress asked how it was, Marek said “only good.” When asked if it was “delicious” he shook his head “no.” Lad know what he likes and how he likes it!

pelota-breakfast2

The eggs and pancakes were pretty good but had an odd taste, like maybe they were cooked with something else at the same time. The bacon was very crispy but a little on the greasy side. The pancakes were thick and not as small as our neighbor Veronica led us to believe, and they weren’t bad. I think the overall breakfast was OK but the atmosphere was definitely bar, not breakfast. We were sitting under this speaker, which was pretty much blaring Salsa and Reggeaton. (We liked the music, it was just Really Loud for having breakfast at 0830 on a Sunday.)

pelota-reggeaton

And the television across from us seemed to be showing looping Spanish advertisements for a Viagra knock-off (a depressed-looking man sitting on a bed by himself, a picture of a pill bottle, flashing words that I think said “no side effects, all natural, guaranteed results,” followed by the same man in a smokey, passionate embrace with a seXXXy woman). Not knocking the need for such supplements nor the necessity of advertising them, it was just odd for the breakfast scene.

pelota-spanish-viagra

The total bill for two was about 12 bucks. We had two full breakfasts, two cafes con leche, a chocolate milk. So I’d say price was just fine. The chow was certainly filling, but did seem like there were other tastes mixed in that weren’t quite negative but were also sort of unexpected. The atmosphere was certainly unique and I think I’ll go back for the bar scene (tampabaybars.com? Nope, someone’s already doing that one), but I think the loud music and general stocking of the liquor well was sort of not conducive to a great early morning breakfast ambiance. Our waitress was exceptionally nice and we’d cheerfully return for the cafe con leche, her pleasant demeanor, and maybe so Marek could stand in the middle of the floor and dance again. I didn’t ask, but I get the feeling that La Pelota is trying something new with breakfast and it’s going to mature into something really good over time. We came away thinking that this was a 2.5 pancake breakfast, but I’m going to give a half-point bonus because the people were so nice and friendly.

We give this Tampa Bay Breakfast a three pancake rating.

Revisit to Pop-n-Sons

We revisited Pop-n-Sons diner on 30 January 2010. Our first visit was back in May 2009. We had a fine time then, and we had a fine time today. As you can see from the sign, they have a special on scrapple. Grandpaw will be interested to know that!

pop-outside3

Check out the neat mural of a drive-in out on the front porch.

pop-outside2

This Tampa Bay Breakfast was a real treat. We had our favorite guest reviewer, Mom!

pop-guest-reviewer

Here’s a nice touch. We sit down and automatically they bring us crayons.

pop-color

This never happens to me when I’m alone, so I’m taking advantage of the crayons! Also, check out my kickin’ LISA09 shirt! Am I a nerd or what? Don’t make fun of me, Hugh, you’ve got the same shirt.

pop-color2

Marek says, hey old man, you’re always making me give you a kiss. How ’bout un beso for me?

pop-kiss

Here’s a nice menu. Not the most comprehensive menu in town, but all the basics are here. And the prices are reasonable, too.

pop-menu

We had some coffee. This pitch-black swill was like having a cup of used battery acid mixed with old Mac truck motor oil. By which I mean it was perfect. This is some great diner coffee!

pop-coffee

Even Mom got into the act. Though she doesn’t appreciate the concept of “diner coffee” so she tried the hot chocolate instead. She’s so cute.

pop-coffee-mom

Watch out! Here comes breakfast! This is a fine spread. We jumped into having three pancakes because we remembered them being a bit small on our last visit. Like that Grabby McGrab paw coming in from the left? There was an actual “yoink” sound.

pop-breakfast1

Marek didn’t seem to care for the pancakes, but he surely loved that bacon!

pop-breakfast2

Our guest reviewer said that the French toast was the best she’s had all day. She’s “in a family way,” which pretty much means that anything she eats has to taste good both going down AND coming back up. We’ll see what happens.

pop-breakfast4

Marek wondered if I had something special going on over here. Of course I did — I had breakfast! Marek had best watch out, he’s coming in through the Breakfast Spider entrance.

pop-breakfast5

Marek declined to pay the bill today. Something about how he was having a bout of sympathetic morning sickness. But the bill for two-and-a-half was a shade over 17 bucks. A little pricey, maybe, but not the most expensive we’ve seen.

pop-pays

On the way out the door, we got into a philosophical discussion about pops with nice lady. Is there truly anything finer than to see a bowl of pops like this?

pop-pops

By the time we got home, the pops had done the trick. Check out that tongue!

pop-pops3

We had a very nice re-visit to Pop-n-Sons Diner. The breakfast is good eating, the prices are OK, and the people are super-nice from start to finish. The 50s diner motif is always fun. And breakfast with Mom is always a winner! Thanks, Mom, for joining us!

We’re pleased to re-affirm this Tampa Bay Breakfast’s four-pancake rating!

one-pancakeone-pancake1one-pancake2one-pancake3

The Olympic Cafe

Have you ever noticed how breakfast is everywhere? North Tampa. South Tampa. St. Pete. Levy County. You can even get a decent breakfast in the Industrial Park.

olympic-outside1

We visited the Olympic Cafe at 5011 W. Hillsborough Avenue on 23 January 2010. This was our first visit to the Olympic Cafe. They have a nice little web site at http://www.theolympiccafe.com/. And while you’re in the parking lot letting your craggy old man take your picture, you can look up and see airplanes taking off from Tampa International.

olympic-outside2

We walked into a warm, cozy little cafe in the middle of the industrial park. Not many people here, but those who were seemed to be locals and regulars. That’s always a good sign. One nice lady informed us that these would be the best pancakes we ever had. Of course, she had no idea that she was talking to Tampa Bay’s only working Pancake Professionals. We know pancakes! And we like eating them, too!

olympic-inside2

When we got settled, we found ourselves right in the middle of a championship race between a Tonka pickup truck and a Ferrari. Grand prize was to be king of the world. Or pancakes.

olympic-truck-vs-ferrari2

The Ferrari won. No surprises there. Though after the race I inspected the undercarriage and found a significant design flaw in the drive train. Apparently they thought a rear differential should hang out like redneck’s beer belly. How are you supposed to win races like that? Also, the Ferrari seemed to have four little donut spare tires on it. What are the boys in Maranello thinking?

olympic-truck-vs-ferrari

And then a Breakfast Spider got the Tonka pickup truck. While Blue Oyster Cult’s “Godzilla” did not conveniently start playing on the house radio, it was playing in my head.

olympic-spiders1

Oh No! The Breakfast Spider is after Marek! Go, Dog, go! Err, I mean, Run, Marek, Run! Run away! Run away!

olympic-spiders2

Whew. That was a close one. After shooing away the spiders we had a look at the menu. We found something special: Greek coffee. We got us some. And pancakes. We got pancakes for sure.

olympic-menu

The coffee was great. We usually have diner coffee. Sometimes we get Cuban coffee or Cafe Con Leche. But this was our first ever Greek coffee for breakfast.

olympic-coffee1

The nice lady said that they even have Turkish folks come in to have gyros. But the Turks never seem to ask for Greek coffee. I’m not surprised. Greeks and Turks are not known for cheery relations. Marek, who is actually Turkish if you believe the stories he tells (he claims to be from Adana, walks around saying “merhaba,” and likes to quote Ataturk speeches), said that he would break the mold and try some Greek coffee too. But he refused to discuss the issue of Cypress. It’s always politics with this kid. Don’t get him started.

olympic-coffee2

Between the fiery Mediterranean politics and the Breakfast Spiders, I thought we were doomed. But then, thankfully, breakfast came. Check out this nice spread.

olympic-breakfast1

The pancakes are thicker than a Ferrari!

olympic-thick-pancakes

Marek wasted no time! He asked for pepper, but I have to lay down SOME law with the boy, lest he think I’m just some pushover.

olympic-breakfast2

While we were having a nice breakfast experience, the proprietress came out to check on us. It’s always a fine thing to have this kind of visit; it’s a mark of pride you don’t see every day. We had a nice discussion about how Greeks are great cooks. Then we got a complimentary Greek treat, some Greek rice pudding!

olympic-dessert

Marek went to pay the bill, but he fell down. He cried out how he was Dante descending into Inferno. I pointed out to him that Dante was Italian, not Greek. And Dante started his journey on Good Friday, which is months from now. Sheesh. Kids these days.

olympic-marek-pays1

Finally he sorted it out and found the register. The tab was about 8 clams. Not too bad!

olympic-marek-pays2

When we were done we sat in the back of the car and talked about it. Kind of odd location. Food was pretty good. Price was right. Greek coffee was excellent. Complimentary rice pudding was sweet, both literally and figuratively. People were exceptionally nice. What do you think? Four pancakes? Yeah, dad, let’s say four pancakes. Done. Also, check out my super Save Yankeetown t-shirt. You can’t buy these at Wal-Mart!

olympic-discussion

We’re pleased to award the Olympic Cafe with a Tampa Bay Breakfasts rating of four pancakes.

one-pancakeone-pancake1one-pancake2one-pancake3

When we were driving home, Marek wanted to take pictures with my phone. I handed it to him. When I got home, he had emailed me this picture. I didn’t even know my phone could email a picture. Kids these days. Impressive!

The Dome Grill

Have you seen our Tampa Bay Breakfast Map? It’s really heavy on Hillsborough County. We didn’t give Pinellas County nearly enough pancake love in 2009. Marek says, hey freezer geezer, let’s pull one of these breakfast recommendations out of the bucket and head across the bridge. I fired up the Breakfast Mobile whilst Marek sat in the Navigator seat and directed.

dome-directions

We landed at The Dome Grill at 561 Central Ave in St. Pete. This was our first visit to The Dome.

dome-outside

The Dome was recommended by our friend Aleshea. If you hear one voice rising above the cacophony of the Tampa Bay area, it’s probably Aleshea. She doesn’t know it yet, but she is The Official Poet of Tampa Bay Breakfasts. She’s our current favorite driving-to-breakfast music. She’s all that, AND she can repair the suspension on a military-grade Humvee.

dome-aleshea-cars2

The inside of The Dome is quite nice. It’s a place where you order and pay at the counter, then they call your number for you to come collect your pancakes. There was a locals vibe, and everyone we met was friendly as family.

dome-inside

There’s what looks like a kickin’ little take-away bakery here. There’s baklava there … do you think The Dome is actually a Greek place? Do historians know for sure that Plato, Socrates, Aristotle did NOT have blueberry pancakes for breakfast every day? Epicurus would have, fo sho, yo, if here weren’t so pent up.

dome-bakery

Here’s the centerpiece, though. This is pure artwork. An object of reverence, aptly placed on an altar in the center of the room. I saw this and knew I was in the hands of coffee passion. Oh, the deliciousness that it contained.

dome-coffee-machine

This coffee ought to come with a disclaimer — it’s so good you might forget where you parked. Look at that perfect color. In RGB terms, that is #000000.

Check out our Official Poet playing trucks by herself back there. Sure, one might assume that Marek’s across the table from her, but that would be an assumption, now wouldn’t it?

dome-coffee

OK, I’m just kidding. Marek really is there playing cars. Which is a nice segue into introducing Bryan, a fine musician, a photographer of exceptional talent, and Aleshea’s main squeeze!

dome-marek-aleshea-bryan

Enough with the chit-chat, long chops! Get to the breakfast! (Marek typed that.)

We all had some really fine chow this morning! Bryan and Aleshea come here often, but they tried new things today in the spirit of being Guest Reviewers.

dome-breakfast-bryan

Marek couldn’t keep to his own and jumped into mine. He helped me out by making sure there were enough finger-holes in my pancakes. Whudda guy.

dome-breakfast-andy-marek

The eggs were great, the bacon was fine, though not Steve-Standard, but the pancakes were simply awesome. These were really, really good pancakes. I’d say second only to Skyway Jacks for the bay area. Throw in some blueberries and we might have a little competition on our hands here.

dome-breakfast-aleshea

Really good pancakes. I went to check on the menu and it’s true, they serve breakfast all day. All day breakfast is one of those marvels of the world, like plumbing or calculus, where you might not come across it every day but when you do you think, now here’s something worthy of note.

dome-menu

Marek washed it all down with juice. He had to build up his strength …

dome-marek2

… for playing more cars! Cars!

dome-marek-aleshea-cars

When we were done, we dropped a stack of Tampa Bay Breakfasts business cards with the rest of the fliers. We’re spreadin’ the good word about breakfasts throughout the Tampa Bay Area (and the Levy-Citrus-Marion Tri-County Area, too, of course). There’s no pancake we will leave unflipped in our quest to visit every mom-n-pop breakfast shop there is.

dome-cards

Man, we like breakfast. No, we are not nutcases. Well, maybe Marek a little bit, but I’m perfectly sane.

So what about The Dome Grill? This Dome is to breakfast what Brunelleschi’s Dome is to free-standing stone domes in the Northern Italian Renaissance. It’s rock-solid and it sets a standard for others to follow. It’s different in that it’s not in Florence and was not built using the cantilever method. All four of us for about 24 clams. Great chow. Neat location. This is a fine Tampa Bay Breakfast. We’re pleased to give The Dome four and a half pancakes.

Aleshea says that we also need to try that place across the street …

The Brunchery

Our plan this morning was to go to Aunti Donna’s on South Macdill Ave. Aunti Donna’s appears to be closed. Breakfast is cut-throat business in Tampa, folks!

brunchery-donnas

We visited The Brunchery at 3225 S. MacDill Avenue on 9 January 2010. This was our first Tampa Bay Breakfast of the year and our first visit to The Brunchery. They also have a web site at http://www.brunchery.com/.

brunchery-outside

Inside is very nice. I know the low-lighting is deliberate, but it plays havoc with my little phone camera. And it made it feel like Marek and I were on a date. Very romantic. The neatest thing about the interior is this long bench along the wall. Very communal feeling! Marek insisted that he sit on that side and I sit in the chair across from him so we could play cars.

brunchery-bench

The menu is pretty extensive. Prices seem pretty reasonable. There’s a lot of discussion in this menu about the craft of breakfast, with special this and hand-made that. Of course, we eat that stuff up. Get it? We “eat it up!” Hawahhahawhwhaw!

I slay me.

brunchery-menu

They brought us crayons. We love crayons. Now, of course, they ended up in the coffee after a few minutes, but hey, everything has its place. Marek also puts pepper on his pancakes, but we’re not discussing that today.

brunchery-crayons

While we were waiting, we got some all-important father-son affection. I’ve got to draw notice to my hilarious shirt. There’s no humor like Bourne Shell Humor.

brunchery-andy-marek

We had coffee, too. You know how much we love coffee. And Thomas the Train, by the way, but that’s another story. The coffee at The Brunchery came in two flavors: Normal and frou frou. We chose normal, because we’re manly men and we like drinking battery acid. We found this coffee to have a nice taste, but, in all honesty, it seemed a little weak. Maybe we’re just numb from all the high-octane truck stop go-juice over the years, but I definitely like my coffee stronger.

brunchery-coffee

Then breakfast came! We love breakfast! Now our fine waitress did warn us that the “two, two, and two” breakfast pancakes were small and that the “normal” pancakes were, well, normal. So we go the triple-two route plus a single blueberry pancake. That blueberry pancake was rockin’ like Elvis, let me tell you. But a 2-pence coin in England is larger than these two pancakes Marek had. These were mere dollops of pancake. We were warned, but wow, that warning was on-target!

brunchery-breakfast1

Marek didn’t mind, and dove right in. Our waitress asked us if everything was OK. I asked Marek if it was delicious. He shook his head “no.” I asked him if it was “only good.” He nodded his head “yes.” Lad knows the difference. That’s pretty neat.

brunchery-breakfast2

Marek ate both those little pancakes, which probably add up to a whole pancake elsewhere. All in all he ate pretty well. Wash it all down with a good belt of juice.

brunchery-juice

When we were all done, Marek did not want to pay the bill. Instead, he hopped like a frog for a while. I declined to join him, though I know he would have loved it if we all had.

brunchery-marek-doesnt-pay

We had a pretty nice time at The Brunchery. The food was tasty and the bill was only ten dollars, but the coffee was a little weak and the pancakes were small. It’s also cold as the dickens out today, so maybe our taste buds are off today. This was a fine breakfast, all things considered. We’re pleased to give The Brunchery a three and a half pancake rating.
