Breakfasts

Ric’s Kountry Kitchen

Andy visited Ric’s Kountry Kitchen in April 2009. Marek wasn’t along for the ride, as Ric’s is on Ras Abu Aboud Street in Doha, Qatar. This is not a formal Tampa Bay Breakfast so we’re not giving it an actual rating. (Marek’s the one who actually assigns the ratings, I just do the web page.)

rics-6

My colleague Zaya was also on this trip and agreed to be a guest reviewer for Tampa Bay Breakfasts. If you run into her on the sidewalk, ask her why her forearms are uncovered in these pictures.

rics-7

You can get killed by this breakfast, if this omelet is to be believed.

rics-1

I had the pancakes.

rics-3

Zaha had the eggs.

rics-8

Let’s be honest here. If we were in Tampa Bay, this would have been a 2-pancake rating, maximum. The pancakes were iffy and Zaya’s eggs had a melted-plastic appearance. But this was a real American diner in the middle of Doha, Qatar. And the coffee was pretty danged good.

rics-5

So after having had your fill of things like baby camel, one does find a certain sense of welcome relief going to breakfast at Ric’s. It’s an oasis in a breakfast desert.

camel

At the end of the day, if Ric’s is good enough for the United States Army Central Command, then it’s good enough for Tampa Bay Breakfasts!

Weekly Breakfast for Tampa’s Homeless

We visited a weekly breakfast provided to Tampa’s homeless by several church groups in the area. The breakfast is held in the parking lot at 1312 N Tampa St every Saturday morning at around 0800.

mission1

Marek jumped right in to help.

mission2

And off he went to lend a hand.

mission3

His assigned task was to distribute toothpaste.

mission4

We spent some time with Denise, our neighbor and good friend.

mission-marek-denise

This breakfast group accepts donations of all sorts and acts as a distribution point for food and clothing for Tampa’s homeless population. If you’d like to donate or help out you’re welcome to just show up. Alternately you may contact Andy at andy@sonador.com to find out more.

We are pleased to give this Tampa Bay Breakfast a five pancake rating!

Mom’s Place

We visited Mom’s Place at 4816 N Dale Mabry Hwy on 13 June. Mom’s is right next door to Pop ‘n’ Son’s Diner, a Tampa Bay Breakfast from last month. We’ve been to Mom’s a few times and have always enjoyed our visits.

moms-outside

Mom’s is one of those great greasy-spoons where everyone feels comfortable. Lots of local sports pictures on the walls and it seemed like it was full of regulars, especially car folks from the dealerships on Dale Mabry. We even recognized the guy from Jiffy Lube who changed the oil in mom’s car last month. As anyone in Tampa knows, we’ve got NFL, NHL, and MLB, so the sports pictures are important.

moms-inside1

Mom’s is a Greek restaurant when it’s not a breakfast joint. We’ve never tried it after breakfast, but folks say it’s great. The most unique thing about Mom’s is the front door, with a homage to the troops. Being a prior-service guy myself, this makes Mom’s a good place in my book.

moms-inside2

Marek promptly set about his primary task of being cute.

moms-marek1

We had breakfast.

moms-marek-andy-breakfast1

The eggs were good. The bacon was good. But we didn’t love the pancakes. For one thing, they were kind of small. Marek says to me, “Oh father, next door at Pop ‘n’ Sons, the pancakes were also diminutive in stature, might it be that we’re in some sort of rift in the space-time-continuum as predicted by Stephen Hawkins in his famous book Pancakes and Astrophysics?” Also, the pancakes weren’t really done well, with sort of a mushy texture to them. These weren’t the worst pancakes we’ve had on our adventures, but they weren’t the best either.

moms-marek-breakfast1

So we’re sitting there having a nice breakfast. It’s all good. Except that the salt shaker really dishes out a lot of salt. The coffee was beautiful, endless, and bitter-black the way we like it. The music was from Q105. While today Q105 is a contemporary adult, friendly to all station, when I was younger it was the coolest station ever. So it was a nostalgic moment for me, and Marek enjoyed some Mcdonald’s apple juice that he seems to have snuck in with him.

moms-marek-juice1

When we were done, Marek paid the bill. It was way-cheap: We walked out of there for hardly a nudge over a fin. That’s a good bargain!

moms-marek-pays1

I think they were surprised to find such a young lad walking around with a fist full of dollars, but everything worked out.

moms-marek-pays21

The pancakes being sketchy as they were, we were sort of leaning towards a lesser rating for Mom’s. But then came the deal-maker. That’s right, a pop.

moms-marek-pop1

That makes it all better.

We had a great time at Mom’s Place, despite the iffy pancakes, and truly enjoyed the people and the atmosphere. We’re pleased to give Mom’s Place a rating of 3.5 pancakes.

We’re trying something new. Let’s see if the Urban Spoon picks up our review!

The Pink Flamingo

We visited The Pink Flamingo Cafe at 304 E. Davis Boulevard on 7 June. The Pink Flamingo Cafe was our first official recommendation (as you can see, we’ve got a tremendous backlog of Breakfast work!). The Pink Flamingo Cafe also has a nice web site at http://www.pinkflamingo.us/. This was our first visit to the Pink Flamingo Cafe. It won’t be our last.

flamingo3

We had breakfast. And it was good.

flamingo-pancake1

I was a bit disappointed that we couldn’t get our old standby of pancakes, bacon, and eggs as a set unit. And they don’t have blueberry pancakes. But the Flamingo did have “banana walnut” pancakes. I gave this a try, and was not disappointed. Making pancakes with a bunch of crazy crap in them can be a good way to get a plate of mushy goo for breakfast, but the Flamingo pulled this off most excellently! And the syrup was nicely warmed up, and rumor is that it’s home-made too. That’s a good touch!

flamingo-marek-andy2

Marek wasted no time digging in, and he ate a lot for his little belly.

flamingo-marek-pancake1

The Flamingo has some unique flair. While we were having pancakes, they played some newer Jimmy Buffet and a track from one of my favorite albums, Donald Fagen’s “The Nightfly”. The dining room is full of classic Florida kitsch as a theme (it IS on an island, after all, so we’ll forgive them for this).

flamingo-inside1

They have a fish tank, which is guaranteed Marek fascination! (Though Marek thought it could use more fish.)

flamingo-fish1

The best thing, the most unique thing about the Flamingo, is that folks can bring their dogs for breakfast, so long as everyone sits outside on the patio.

flamingo21

By the time we were done, there were several dogs with their families. (Our beloved hound, Zimno, will need about $67,453 worth of obedience training before we take HIM here!). Marek was enthralled to find dogs out the door!

flamingo-dogs1

Lest we forget, we had coffee. And it was good. And bottomless!

flamingo-coffee1

Marek paid the bill.

flamingo-marek-pays1

He got into some sort of discussion with the management. I have no idea what they talked about, but I’m betting he was trying to negotiate to get a pop. They must not have had any, as all he brought back was change. But it’s a credit to how good this place was … he didn’t even notice!

flamingo-marek-pays2

The bottom line on The Pink Flamingo Cafe is that this is simply a top-notch Tampa Bay Breakfast. Great food, super-nice people, lots of regulars, dogs and fish, and plenty of strong black coffee. We had a long discussion on the way home if this should be a 4.5 or a 5 pancake rating. We decided that we’d say 4.5 because it was a little pricey (not that it’s wasn’t worth the premium, but it usually we can get breakfast for under 10; today we had to lay out a Jackson to pay). If they’d had pops or blueberry pancakes, it would be a strong contender for the Best Breakfast Ever in Tampa Bay. (That’s a title currently held by Skyway Jack’s, in case you were wondering.)

We’re pleased to give The Pink Flamingo Cafe a 4.5 pancake rating. Thanks to Christine for the great recommendation!

Three Coins Diner

We visited the Three Coins Diner at 7410 N Nebraska Ave on May 30th. Breakfast is very reasonably priced. The special “Club Breakfast” for $5.50 is a really good deal. We’ve been to the Three Coins a bunch of times and we’ve always come away happy. The restaurant also has a web site at http://www.threecoinsdiner.com/.

three-coins

We had breakfast. As our cheerful readers know, we’ve been having a downward slide in our overall happiness with breakfasts. I’m going to be honest with you here. We chose the Three Coins today as a ringer. We knew it would be great, and, frankly, we didn’t want to take any chances. The Three Coins didn’t disappoint. The bacon was good. The eggs were proper (*). And the pancakes… I would like to remind you that we’re highly experienced Pancake Professionals … the pancakes were Just Right.

three-coins-pancakes1

Wait, you say, what about the coffee?

The coffee meets all grade-A parameters: burning hot, black, bitter, bottomless.

three-coins-coffee

But Andy, you say, did Marek have his coffee? Why yes, he did. He’s the only kid I know who likes salted coffee. I think he’ll be starting a trend.

three-coins-coffee-athree-coins-coffee-bthree-coins-coffee-c

We both enjoy a good coffee in the morning.

three-coins-coffee-together

The Three Coins has a nice lunch counter. It’s full of regulars, and we’ve never been there where there wasn’t a table full of local cops. If it’s good enough for Tampa’s Finest, it’s good enough for us!

three-coins-inside

So what’s unique about Three Coins? It’s open 24 hours and is a police favorite. It’s also in a little bit of a sketchy neighborhood. But there’s nothing like Mama’s murals or Martha’s catfish or Nicko’s Elvis. It’s just a really good place that’s close to our house and full of nice folks. We just like the Three Coins a lot.

three-coins-adorable

When we were done, Marek paid the bill.

three-coins-marek-pays-1

He executed a military search pattern on the terrain and found the register by way of a shortcut through the lunch counter.

three-coins-marek-pays-2

We were all set to give the Three Coins a four-pancake rating. The food’s great, the people are great, but it is missing the “unique” factor and all. Then Marek got a pop with the change. That changes everything.

three-coins-marek-pays-3

As the entire Tampa Bay Area knows by now, Marek likes him some lollipops. And a happy Marek is a guaranteed great rating. And this is a Happy Marek.

three-coins-happy-marek

We’re pleased to give the Three Coins Diner a four and a half pancake rating.

Pach’s Place on Bay to Bay

We visited Pach’s Place at 2909 Bay to Bay on 25 May 2009. Pach’s has it’s own web site at http://www.pachsplace.com/.

pachs2

I’m going to be honest from the start on two points:

  1. I just got off a week-long business trip late last night so I was a bit of a crank for breakfast.
  2. Neither Marek nor I really cared for Pach’s.

Point #2 is very likely influenced by point #1, so we’re giving Pach’s a correction of a 1/2 pancake rating bonus right from the start.

half-pancake

Pach’s was crowded. We like a bit of hustle and bustle, so that was OK. There’s a lunch counter and a big Andy Warhol pink Monroe print thing on the back wall on the left (obscured in the picture).

pachs-busy

We had breakfast. There was no special combo like we usually get, with bacon, eggs, and pancakes for one price. So from the start things seemed a little pricey. I was straight-out excited to find my favorite on the menu: Blueberry pancakes!

pachs-blueberry

So I got some blueberry pancakes and some eggs and bacon and a single normal pancake for Marek, as it turns out he doesn’t care for blueberries in his pancakes. What can I say, he’s still young. The eggs were good, but seemed to have spent some extra duty under the heat lamp. The bacon was generous and salty. The coffee was OK. A bit weak, honestly, though I was coming off of a week of some pretty strong Ministry of Defense coffee so maybe it was just me.

pachs-breakfast

Most folks know that one of the things for which we rate a breakfast is the “unique” factor. The most unique part of this breakfast was the Warhol print thing in the back. The nicest part, and a bit unique in our experiences so far, was that the syrup had obviously been warmed up. That’s a very nice touch!

pachs-syrup

But we need to stop for a moment, jetlag aside, and discuss the pancakes. By now, half of Hillsborough County knows that We Like Pancakes. We’re not new at this pancake thing, we’re trained Pancake Professionals. The pancakes were … terrible. Both his and mine were sour, a taste that clashed with the sweet syrup. Maybe it’s a special recipe and folks drive from miles around for it, but Marek took one bite and promptly pushed his away. Even I only finished half of mine, and I’ve eaten a fair amount of Army food and can tell myself I’m enjoying a lot of things.

pachs-marek-done

Regardless of the pancake problems, we had a nice enough time. Marek paid the bill. Along the way, one fellow tried to slip his bill to Marek. Marek stopped and looked at him and then kept on truckin’! Everybody got a good laugh!

pachs-marek-paid

But there was no lollipop for him. As I mentioned, they were really pretty busy so they played along and let him pay the bill, but there wasn’t really any time for goofing around with a 2-year-old. We’ll cut them some slack, but part of the fun is a little goofing around. It was pretty much all business here, from the time we walked in to the time we walked out.

At the end of the day this is an OK place. The location is nice, right close to the bay. The customers all seemed jovial. The staff were pleasant, in a rushed sort of way. The menu was pretty standard, except for not having our preferred configuration, and there was nothing aside from a nice web site to set this Tampa Bay Breakfast apart from any other breakfast. Given that Marek ended up leaving hungry and needed a snack right away ….

pachs-marek-snack

… and given that we were suffering from a bleak worldview, we’re inclined to give Pach’s Place a two pancake rating. We’ll raise that to 2.5 pancakes because we were cranky and that’s hardly the fault of the hard-working folks at Pach’s Place.

Ranch House Restaurant

We visited the Ranch House Restaurant at 7706 W Hillsborough Ave on 16 May 2009. There’s another Ranch House on Gandy, but it doesn’t appear to be the same place. The one on Gandy is a Greek sort of place, while this Ranch House has a definite Hispanic flair. The people were quite friendly and the prices were very reasonable.

ranch-house

We had breakfast. But even better, we had our first Tampa Bay Breakfast Guest, my old friend Pete from Seminole. Thanks for joining us, Pete!

ranch-house-pete-marek

The breakfast was fine. Pete enjoyed the waffle with blueberries. I felt the eggs could have been cooked a little longer. The coffee was perfect, just the way I like it: Hot, Black, Bitter, Diner, Many-Times-Re-Filled. Marek got the chocolate chip pancake … and didn’t care for it at all! He ended up eating all of my pancakes. They must have been good, but I wouldn’t be able to tell you.

ranch-house-marek-pancakes

There’s nothing particularly unique about the Ranch House. It’s a fine place in a strip mall with reasonable food and nice folks. The customers seemed to be mostly snow birds, retirees, and folks from up nawth. The menu did have a special page, with meals named after folks in the family. We’re suckers for this kind of thing.

ranch-house-menu

Marek paid the bill.

ranch-house-marek-pays1

He paid, got the change, and brought it back. The returning of the change will doubtless stop when he’s a teenager.

ranch-house-marek-pays2

And we learned just how much a two year old can remember. He then went back to the counter and just stared at the nice lady. Turns out … he was waiting for his “pop” like he seems to get at most breakfasts. She didn’t have any pops to offer, but he did get a mint. It was pretty funny when he finally tasted it.

ranch-house-what

This is a good place with nice folks, reasonable prices, and a solid breakfast. Marek does not recommend the chocolate chip pancakes at all, nor does he favor the mints.

We give this Tampa Bay Breakfast a rating of three pancakes.

Clearwater Marina Restaurant on Clearwater Beach

We visited the Clearwater Marina Restaurant 25 Causeway Blvd in Clearwater on 10 May 2009. Today was Mother’s Day, so in honor of mom we struck out way beyond our normal territory with the plan of leaving the house empty and quiet at least until after lunch. Andy’s been to the Marina Restaurant before for lunch, but that was well before Marek was born. Breakfast was reasonably priced, but the menu offerings were a bit odd. The place was obviously a healthy mix of tourists (like us, all the way from Tampa!) and locals (“Hi Walt!” “Hi Judy!”) and most everyone seemed friendly, in that working-on-Clearwater-beach-and-harried-by-tourists way.

clearwater-marina2

We had breakfast. There was no standard pancakes-eggs-bacon that we usually get, so we got a single pancake for Marek and an egg “McMuffin” for Andy. Greasy but tasty, and for some reason it came with potato chips and a pickle — that’s a unique breakfast! Marek’s pancake came with Mickey ears, so that’s a plus right out.

clearwater-marek-andy1

Marek had coffee. He usually gets coffee. Err, <finger quotes>coffee</finger quotes>, but this time he had a bit of milk in the cup and really enjoyed it. For Andy, the coffee was perfect: super-hot, super-black, super-bitter, super-diner-style all the way. Mmmm, acidy.

clearwater-marek-coffee

The neatest thing about the Marina Restaurant is that if you bring in fish you caught, they’ll cook it for you. At least that’s what’s painted on the window!

clearwatermarina-cookem

Marek paid the bill.

clearwater-marek-pays1

After a compass heading correction, he found our cheerful waitress. First he tried to pay the nice folks there in the booth. They were kind enough to not take a two-year-old’s breakfast money.

clearwater-marek-pays2

We were all set to give the Marina Restaurant a rating of 2.5 or 3 pancakes. It’s an OK place, but the odd menu was a little outside our usual pleasure and it did take a little while to get served. You know, a fine place but not one to drive 45 minutes just for a pickle on your breakfast.

Then Marek got a sticker.

clearwater-stickers

For our faithful readers, I would like to remind you that this rating system is half about the food and half about leaving happy. Our man Marek was so pleased with that sticker that he stuck it on his hand and wore it until it sweated off him (we were playing at the beach playground after) and then proceeded to carry it pinched between his little fingers for an hour until he finally lost it. That alone is worth bumping the 2.5 to 3.5. We give this Tampa Bay Breakfast a rating of 3.5 pancakes.

Pop ‘n’ Sons Diner on Dale Mabry

We visited Pop ‘n’ Sons Diner at 4812 N Dale Mabry Highway on May 2nd. Today is Marek’s second birthday party, but we still made some time for breakfast. Boys gotta eat, y’know.

Breakfast was very reasonably priced. We split the pancakes, bacon, and eggs breakfast, and we added a biscuit as a nod to our friend Doug, all for just over seven bucks. The people were exceptionally friendly and the customers, while few this morning, appeared to be happy, comfortable, and seemed like regulars.

This was our first ever visit to Pop ‘n’ Sons. Pop ‘n’ Sons has a web site at http://www.popnsons.com/

pop-n-sons

We had breakfast. The eggs were just right. The bacon was pretty good. The pancakes were steaming hot (HOT! Marek says, and starts blowing on them), but they seemed small in comparison to other pancakes we’ve had in the area. The coffee was just right. Marek agreed.

pop-n-sons-breakfast2

My friend Doug, Vice Mayor of the town of Yankeetown, recently suggested that we not overlook the quality of biscuits when we review a Tampa Bay Breakfast. Doug, we had a biscuit. I can attest that it was good. Marek didn’t try it. He claimed it was hot and wanted to blow on it, however, so at least he participated.

pop-n-sons-biscuit1

Pop ‘n’ Sons is one of those 50s retro/revival/poodle-skirt kind of diners. Lots of period memorabilia on the walls, lots of chrome in the furnishings. You could stage Grease The Musical here. As you can see, the place is remarkably clean and polished. As part of the theme, they have a very nice lunch counter. We like lunch counters and will be sitting at them when Marek gets older. Or taller. Which ever comes first.

pop-n-sons-counter

A unique feature of Pop ‘n’ Sons, to go along with the 50s theme, is the car show they sponsor on a regular basis.

pop-n-sons-carshow

If you know Marek, you know he likes Clifford, lollipops, his mother, pancakes, and cars. Carrrrrrs, dada, carrrrrrrsssss.

pop-n-sons-cars

Marek paid the bill. He got a little lost and tried to pay the people at the next table over, but we got that sorted out eventually.

pop-n-sons-marek-pays

And he got a pop. Now let me tell you, if you don’t already know. Marek likes him some lollipop action. This is a sure way for him to leave happy, which is almost a guarantee to not get below three pancakes on your review!

pop-n-sons-marek-pop

While the 50s theme isn’t usually our bag, hep daddy-o, the supremely friendly people at Pop ‘n’ Sons truly started our day out right. We give this Tampa Bay Breakfast a rating of four pancakes.

Nicko’s on North Florida

We visited Nicko’s restaurant at 4603 N Florida Ave on April 25th. Breakfast is very reasonably priced, especially the weekend special of pancakes, eggs, and bacon for under six bucks. That’s what we get when we visit. We’ve been to Nicko’s at least half a dozen times.

nicos1

We had breakfast. The pancakes were very good. The eggs were just right. The bacon was good. The coffee was perfect diner-style, hot, bitter, and black.

nickos-breakfast1

Nicko’s place was visited by Elvis in 1956. No kidding. This is so cool. You don’t even have to like Elvis to dig this.

nickos-elvis1

Every time we’ve ever visited Nicko’s, The Elvis Booth has been taken. Not today! We got to sit at the booth and check out the little sign on the wall.

nickos-elvis2

The people at Nicko’s are always friendly. The place is full of regulars and folks know each others’ names. There’s also a lunch counter, which is simply a great way to have a meal. We’ll be sitting at the counter when Marek gets older.
