Breakfasts

Waffle House in Biloxi, MS

We visited the Waffle House at 1759 Beach Blvd in Biloxi Mississippi on 21 May 2010. There are 16 Waffle Houses in the Biloxi area, and not a single mom and pop pancake shop that we could find. But we were on a road trip. We were hungry. We had to make do. Note the little patch of gray-blue behind the white pickup truck; that’s the Gulf of Mexico. That’s right. A waterfront Waffle House. And you were making fun …

waffle-outside

This was Tampa Bay Breakfasts’ first ever visit to a Waffle House. Here’s an interesting comparison. Pacagoula-Biloxi-Gulfport has 16 Waffle Hausen. The entire Tampa Bay area (like, totally, all of Pinellas and Hillsborough counties) has only 7. Marek scoped the menu. Waffles, hmmm?

waffle-menu

We had to get coffee right away. Me and Marek, we like us some coffee!

waffle-menu-coffee

Now regardless of what you think about Waffle House, it is pretty cool that you can watch the magic happen. There’s pretty much no spitting in your grits here!

waffle-kitchen

We played with Mater. This little guy actually has a wobbly suspension out of the factory. Seriously, roll him across the table and he wobbles back and forth, on purpose. As an authentic redneck-small-town fellow, I’m trying to figure if Disney is making fun of me with this.

waffle-mater2

We had breakfast with a Very Pretty Girl this morning.

waffle-pretty-girl2

Marek made fun of the wobbly suspension problem and got in trouble by mom. Mater appeared nonplussed.

waffle-mater

We had breakfast.

waffle-breakfast1

And more breakfast.

waffle-breakfast2

Marek had lots of bacon. Because, well, I just don’t know.

waffle-bacon

The bill came and it was pretty reasonable. We all ate for around eleven bucks. Actually, the three of us split a single “special” and none of us left hungry.

waffle-bill

After breakfast we took a walk on the beach. Our Waffle House is in the distance on the very right of the photograph.

waffle-beach

The water was murky, but that’s how the water is in Biloxi. Can’t blame Katrina or BP for this one; it was like that in 1995 when Famous TBB Guest Reviewer Mom and I lived here in 1995.

waffle-ocean

After all that, we felt like, well, we had been to a big chain breakfast, but at least we weren’t hungry. That’ll tide us over for a few hours!

waffle-kiss

Long enough to get to Mobile to check out the U.S.S. Alabama!

marek-alabama2

Where we had ice cream.

marek-alabama3

And learned how to fly jets. (Actually, the jet trainer seats were at the Air Force Armament Museum the next day, but hey, we’re a breakfast blog, not Jane’s, so get off our backs about it!)

marek-fighter-training

The Country Skillet

We were driving down the road. This morning we were discussing the finer points of the Existentialist authors. I said Albert Camus. Marek said Sartre. I said Kant. Marek said Allen Ginsberg.

WHAT? Ginsberg was a Beat Poet, not an Existentialist writer! You silly little boy you. Tickle, tickle! Not an Existentialist, tickle giggle tickle! What were you thinking, goo, goo, giggle, tickle!

country-tickle

Kids these days. I mean, really, Ginsberg an Existentialist? Sure, there’s some common themes there

Wait! Stop the car! FIRETRUCK!

country-firetruck

That fire truck was parked at The Country Skillet at 2839 Roosevelt Blvd in Clearwater. I wonder if they have pancakes! They have a web site at http://thecountryskillet.com/. See how they love their customers with all those pictures? How can this not be a great place?

country-outside1

Inside was homey, just like you’d expect in a breakfast joint. I’m using “joint” in the 1950s diner sense here. This is a kid-safe review, you Beat-generation hippies!.

country-inside1

That’s right, a perfect place for the face-off that we’ve all been waiting for. Ever since we started Tampa Bay Breakfasts over a year ago, we get emails, telephone calls, and yes, even Western Union telegrams, asking us who is faster, a classic 1976 VW Bug or a tuner VW GTI.

country-cars2

Race fans, you’re in good hands.

country-cars1

The GTI has the advantage of wheelbase. And nitrous. But anything made in 1976 has got to be good! Like Marek’s mom.

country-cars-wheelbase

Are you ready? Three! Two! One!

country-cars3

What a race! Marek’s been taking all the pictures this morning.

country-coffee2

Calls for a coffee. This was good coffee.

country-coffee1

Here comes some pancakes! Rumor is, this is a special Chicago recipe. The warmed up syrup is a nice touch, too.

country-breakfast1

Marek has decided that he likes syrup on his bacon. This was actually the first time Marek was ever responsible for his own syrup. A milestone!

country-breakfast2

No ketchup, though. It looks buggy. VW buggy. Get it? Bug, like the car not like actual bugs! Haw, haw, that’s hilarious. Seriously. I slay me with this stuff.

country-bugs-ketchup

Marek likes to keep the coffee flowing!

country-breakfast3

When Marek is taller, we’ll sit over here. Nice counter!

country-inside2

We wrapped up with a bill for around 11 bucks. Pretty standard pricing model.

country-bill

We walked away with smiles all the way. And Marek took all the pictures. It’s hard to read, but my t-shirt says “BEER, it’s what’s for dinner.” With a shirt like that, I’m surprised I’m not the mayor of Tampa.

country-smile

Did someone say that the BEER shirt looks sort of aged? Here’s a shot of me wearing the same shirt about 8 years ago. Note the lack of kid-induced gray hair. Note that favorite guest reviewer Mom has a care-free “I ain’t never havin’ no kids” look in her lovely eyeballs. Note that we’re having fun at an actual beer festival. Yes, dear TBB fan, this shirt pre-dates a lot of things, including the concept of getting up early enough for breakfast.

andy_heather_fest

So this is a good breakfast. Solid on the bacon, great eggs, nice coffee. Marek loved the pancakes. Seemed to be full of locals. Overall, a nice experience. We didn’t identify anything unique, like brains on the menu or a Buddhist shrine in the corner, or anything like that, just a good, solid breakfast diner.

We’re pleased to give the Country Skillet a four-pancake rating.

one-pancakeone-pancakeone-pancakeone-pancake

On the way home, we stopped at the beach on the Courtney Campbell. That makes for a very nice morning.

Skyway Jacks II

This morning we meditated about breakfast. We were on a quest. We are the visionaries, and we WILL try EVERY PANCAKE in the Tampa Bay area. We shall lead the people to a better breakfast!

marek-andy-sky1

When you have visions like that, you’ve gotta wear shades.

jacks2-sunglasses

We visited Skyway Jacks II at 11140 4th St N on 9 May 2010. This was our first visit to to SJ2, The Other Jacks. We found out about it through the tried-and-true method of looking for another place and getting lost (Country Skillet, we’ll hit you up next time!). Note the reserved parking spot for the Breakfast Bullet Car. As Tampa Bay’s only true Pancake Professional, this is the kind of treatment we’ve come to expect. S JK 308. Stuttgart Jurgen K. 30 August. There’s a story there, a lotta history. Buy me breakfast one day and I’ll tell you all ’bout it.

jacks2-outside

You can’t really tell from the picture above, but Jacks2 is in a strip mall. That’s usually a killer-of-breakfast-ambiance, but here at SJ2 this outside patio actually manages to seem welcoming and friendly.

jacks2-outside2

This is obviously, and not just by the name, a second iteration of Skyway Jacks, the winner of the prestigious 2009 Tampa Bay Breakfast of the Year award. All through SJ2 you see these echos of the original.

jacks2-outside3

We had a special guest reviewer today. TBB Fan Shelley, and her four-legs sidekick Banjo. Shelley is just like us, a member of the Bay Area Regional Food Epicurean Reporters, a group I just made up. Check out her great recipes and writings here!

Marek welcomes Shelley …

jacks2-banjo1

And then proceeds to ignore her for Banjo.

jacks2-banjo3

And then moves in on Banjo’s territory completely. I’m not going to lie to you, dear reader, this was pretty strange.

jacks2-marek-puppy

Marek got back in his seat because this enormous chicken with eggs for boobs told him to. Here’s a reason why I love Skyway Jacks. Eggs are potential baby chickens. Obviously, not every egg is a new chicken, but that’s the whole point of eggs. So isn’t it sort of grotesque to have the Skyway Jacks chicken wearing a shirt with broken, cooked eggs on it? It’s just like when you see a sign for a BBQ shack where it’s a pig in a skirt, grinning and holding out a platter of pulled pork. Perverse, I tell you. Perverse.

jacks2-marek1

SJ2 has the same sort of extensive menu that the original offers. This is the only place I know where you can get a nice plate of S.O.S. I remember having this at my grandparents’ house in the 70s, and I seem to recall that it stood for something on a shingle, not “Save our Ship”.

jacks2-menu2

It didn’t take long for us to get breakfast.

jacks2-breakfast1

And it was the same awesome blueberry pancakes you’d find at our fav SJ1.

jacks2-breakfast2

The coffee was good stuff, just the way we like it. Though I’m going to have to admit, we saw the bottom of the cup several times. This was probably because we were outside and most of the action was inside. But us growing boys, we need all those healthy vitamins and minerals you can only get with a good cup of morning motor oil.

jacks2-coffee

While we were having our morning chow, Marek had some fans stop by to ask for autographs. Marek obliged because even though he’s a celebrity, he’s still in touch with the people.

jacks2-people

We finished up and went inside to wash up. Sows. You gotta love it. Of course, we didn’t use this one.

jacks2-sows

The same sign at the original Skyway Jacks is in color. Just cross-referencing here, to keep the academics happy. Next week we’ll write the whole review in MLA style, with footnotes.

skyway-sows

So we washed up and were headed out. Marek sees the counter and darts behind it. Say I to he, “what the Sam Hill are you doin’ back there, boy?” He replies, and I am not making this up, “I’m looking for a pop!” The nice register lady announced that they did not have any pops. But they have a whole bucket of them at the original Skyway Jacks! We were disappointed.

jacks2-no-pops

We paid the bill. Not bad. Not great, but not bad. Around 11 bones.

jacks2-bill
Marek and Shelley sat and talked about the finer points of our respective breakfasts. We had a very nice breakfast. Great pancakes, reasonable eggs and bacon. Coffee delicious but sometimes vacant. Guest Reviewers Shelley and Banjo had a great breakfast, with a health-conscious vegetable omelet. No one went away hungry. Though we did all go away, as spending the entire day at a breakfast joint would be sort of creepy. They agreed that this was a 4-pancaker experience; great food, reasonable prices, but dry coffee wells, no pops, and it’s in a strip mall knocked it down a bit.

jacks2-marek-shelley

We’re pleased to grant Skyway Jacks II a Tampa Bay Breakfasts Four-Pancake Rating.

one-pancakeone-pancakeone-pancakeone-pancake

When we were done, Marek says, hey there parental unit, why don’t we quit saying “Skyway” over and over and just go take a ride on it? This Marek, he’s the one with ideas! So we did. We went uuuuuppppp….

jacks2-bridge1

This is really high!

jacks2-bridge2

And we came down the other side. Wow, that’s the Biggest Bridge Ever! It’s even bigger than the bridge in Bratislava, though it doesn’t have a UFO restaurant.

jacks2-bridge3

I know what you’re thinking, oh loyal reader. Why the heck would you pay the toll and go all the way across the Skyway? Well duh, because there’s a race track in Bradenton!

races0

We saw these guys race.

races2

We saw Lady Drag Racers.

races5

And we saw some motorcycles race, too.

races6

And we got some fries and juice, because we’re three years old and so that’s what we do.

races8

And all this makes for one long day.

jacks2-sleeping

After we all parted ways, TBB Fan Shelley sent a picture of Banjo’s ride home. Now that’s one good lookin’ puppy!

The Pink Flamingo

This kid would melt Stalin’s heart.

flamingo-adorable

We re-visited The Pink Flamingo on 1 May 2010. Our first visit was on 7 June 2009, almost a year ago. That’s a lotta pancakes under the bridge.

flamingo-outside

We had a great breakfast and Marek went inside to pay the bill.

flamingo-pay

In order to truly understand his state of mind at this moment, we have to take a Rod Serling-esque trip back in time. To this.

flamingo-driving2

We had great pancakes today. Really, The Pink Flamingo is in the running for the 2010 Breakfast of the Year award. This is a prestigious award won last year by Skyway Jacks.

flamingo-breakfast-marek

Is that the Pancake-Powered Race Car? What’s that dog doing in there?

flamingo-driving4

Now I’m going to tell you, The Pink Flamingo’s banana/walnut pancakes really rock. They are fabo, as the kids say these days. But the blueberry pancakes … well, any time a pancake is doctored up after the fact with blueberry goo on top, that’s just not the same thing. These were fine pancakes, but not the kind of inspired work you find in banana/walnut artistry. Steve, you’d not have liked this bacon at all.

flamingo-breakfast-andy

Did Marek grow a lot of body hair this morning?

flamingo-driving3

The coffee was just right. And while we did see the bottom of the cup a couple of times, the situation never lasted long enough to be dire. Marek likes him some coffee, folks.

flamingo-coffee-cheers

When he doesn’t get his coffee in the morning, he looks like this. It’s rough.

flamingo-driving1

I mean he REALLY likes his coffee!

flamingo-coffee-gulp

Who let that dog in here? This is a breakfast restaurant, not a dog park! Crazy people!

flamingo-zimno1

While we waited, we played cars. We always have us some cars handy, just in case a drag race breaks out!

flamingo-coffee-car

Holy moly! That’s OUR DOG! Zimno, The Chaotic Hound. Well-behaved at an outdoor breakfast restaurant, no doubt due to the power-steering collar he’s sporting. Incredible!

flamingo-zimno-snack

This was another great breakfast at The Pink Flamingo! Great chow, nice people, wonderful location. And we brought our four-legs for his first ever Tampa Bay Breakfast. The price was a little high at 14 zlotys, as we’ve noted before, but not so much as to take away from any of the high points.

flamingo-bill

We really dig The Pink Flamingo!

flamingo-laugh-cry

We’re pleased to re-affirm last year’s rating of four and a half pancakes for this fine Tampa Bay Breakfast!

one-pancakeone-pancake1one-pancake2one-pancake3half-pancake

Out on Davis Island there’s a great dog park. We took all six legs (two for Marek and four for Zimno) out there to play after breakfast. This is Marek with a guy who is not me.

marek-dogpark-080

And this is Marek with a dog that is not Zimno.

marek-dogpark-062

Who knows what’s going on here…

marek-dogpark-070

And we wrapped it all up with an apple.

marek-dogpark-082

The Front Porch

We’re taking a road trip today! First we need some PANCAKES, then we’re going to visit grandma and grandpa (also known as Huppa for some reason only Marek can fathom). In order to get our minds ready for this adventure, we tuned in to WTRS. This is the only radio station from which I ever won anything by calling into a contest. The question was, “what is the capitol of Alaska?” I says out loud, “Juneau.” My buddies around say bull-poop, it’s Anchorage. I say bull-true, it’s Juneau. Bull-poop. Bull-true. I called and won two tickets to some circus. Kids these days are no better. They’d just think it was Wasilla instead of Anchorage.

I wonder if they have pancakes in Alaska.

So we’re driving 100 miles to get breakfast. I’m listening to “Thunder Country” and hoping to win another contest after my last great radio contest success 30 years ago. Marek is reading Green Eggs and Ham. What? I bet you thought that all this breakfast expertise came naturally. Let me assure you, we have to study to maintain currency in our profession. Marek and I, we’re no different than your average small engine mechanic or vascular surgeon. We even have to study the psychological and social implications of breakfast.

front-green-eggs

We visited The Front Porch at 12039 North Florida Avenue in Dunnellon on 24 April 2010. And here’s something funny. I growed up ’round these parts and I never knowed that this was “North Florida Avenue” until just now. Until this very moment, to me the official location of The Front Porch was “just over the bridge, it’s on the left.” Here at Tampa Bay Breakfasts, we always bring something new for everyone, even ourselves. I’ve been to The Front Porch more times than I can remember.

front-outside

The Front Porch has been here a while. It’s been one of the most stable, long-standing, loved places in Dunnellon. It’s the kind of place where you’ll find things on the menu named after customers. It’s that kind of home-town. And there’s even an actual front porch.

front-outside2

I asked Marek if he was ready for some green eggs and ham. He assured me that he would not, could not, not even in Dunnellon, like green eggs and ham.

front-ready

Let’s get inside! First thing we did was get coffee. I bet you didn’t see THAT coming!

front-coffee-cheers

And then there were crayons. You know it’s a good place when they automatically understand the mind of a three year old. And they understood Marek pretty well, too.

front-crayons

The Front Porch is a nice, homey, old-timey sort of place. So we brought an old-timey car with us.

front-cars2

Here are the rules to the game. You may try this at home, but please, kids, only with adult supervision. First, roll the car to dad.

front-cars1

Next, dad hides the car. Marek laughs and laughs and laughs.

front-hideandseek-car

HELP! RUN! BREAKFAST SPIDERS!

front-spiders

That was a close one.

Let’s have breakfast. What you see here is Marek saying, hey long-chops, where’s my pancake?!

front-breakfast1

Great eggs, pretty good bacon, very nice pancakes. These are the same sort of pancakes you’d get at The Dome in St. Pete, great flavor and consistency. No blueberry pancakes, though, which always seems, well, to be an oversight, like forgetting to compliment your wife’s new hairdo (I LOVE it, darling! It’s the real you! What’s different?) or not sending flowers to your neighbor’s cat’s funeral. But even with a dearth of blueberries, these are still top-notch pancakes.

front-breakfast3

When we were done, Marek and I argued over who would pay the bill. We ended up doing it together because, well, he’s three and can’t really be argued with successfully because he can bring on a serious filibuster of crying if he wants to block any legislation. But for just over 10 clams, this is a reasonable breakfast.

front-bill

The dining room was packed, full of locals and tourists (we counted as both, in my opinion. While we DID drive all the way from Tampa for these pancakes, I AM also a Dunnellon High School graduate). We paid the bill, collected our full tummies, and said adios to our friends at The Front Porch.

front-inside

Good chow. Good prices. The epitome of local flavor. Great people. No blueberries. 100-mile-drive. This is a great breakfast and one of our consistent favs. We’re pleased to give this Tampa Bay Breakfast a four and a half pancake rating.

one-pancakeone-pancake1one-pancake2one-pancake3half-pancake

The parking lot was full of caterpillars! How neat is THAT?

Mamas Kitchen Family Restaurant

We revisited Mamas Kitchen Family Restaurant on 10 April 2010. We were last here on 15 August 2009, and before that Mamas was our very first official Tampa Bay Breakfast, exactly 51 weeks ago. That’s right, pancake fans, we’ve been your diligent Breakfast Professionals for a whole year! There’s been some changes at Mamas, but the best parts are still there.

mamas-outside

First thing you’ll notice is that there’s a new menu and the dining room is shuffled a little bit. If you’re thinking that there’s new management, you’re right. George from Mamas South told me last week that his cousin had sold the place, but that it still smells like Staten Island so it’s still a great place to visit.

mamas-menu

We’re driving up to get some pancakes, and Marek says from the back, dad, you know, I’ve been thinking. Maybe I might like to consider playing with cars today. It has been approximately, according to my calculations, 8 seconds since I last played with any cars. So maybe I’ll play cars now.

mamas-marek

And what do you know, the kid brought a friend, our favorite Tampa Bay Breakfasts guest reviewer, Mom! Mom appears to know her way around the Matchbox circuit. Look at that race-time passion!

mamas-mom

Mom points out that this is a boy lion and this is a girl lion, and the girl lion needs lots and lots of shoes. Marek replied that they’re both TIGERS, MOM! I slowly edged my chair back to join another family.

mamas-lions

Was there coffee? Yoooobetcha, and it’s just as good as ever, by which I mean that if you went and bought a brand new 1957 Chevy and you drove it every day until 10 April 2010 and you never once changed the motor oil, and in fact you took dirty motor oil from other cars and maybe your lawnmower and you used that to top off your engine when the oil was a little low, and then finally you changed your oil but used a coffee pot to drain it, then you have this good, dark, bitter, diner coffee that is probably stunting my growth and killing my brain cells. Good coffee, and I never once saw the bottom of the cup, which is standard service at Mamas.

mamas-coffee

So we’ve had these pancakes before. Actually quite a few times; we’ve probably had breakfast at Mamas more than at any other mom-n-pop pancake shop in the bay area. This is the only breakfast we’ve reviewed three times. There’s a reason for that. This is good chow.

mamas-breakfast1

Marek tends to agree. This maneuver is something he learned from watching WWF. The old Fork-in-the-Eyeball take-down. Dusty Rhodes used to do this one in the 70s.

mamas-breakfast3

We all need some coffee when we’re having pancakes as good as these! Is it just me, or does this look like a scene from a movie?

mamas-coffee2

When we are all done, Marek went to pay. He had some help from our favorite Breakfast Bella, Vicky. If you go to Mamas, be sure to tip her well and tell her you’re there because of Tampa Bay Breakfasts.

mamas-marek-pays

Marek always gets the special treatment at Mamas. Well, he IS a celebrity. As a founding member of Tampa’s only Pancake Professional Posse, he is used to it. But here at Mamas he really is the Magistrate of the Morning Meal.

mamas-marek-pays2

We’re so alliterative. But that’s largely because being palindromic would be so very time-consuming.

We walked out the door with full bellies, a cheerful disposition from talking to cheerful Vicky, and we even got a pop.

mamas-marek-pop

Great chow. Great people. Lions (or tigers if you believe Marek with his unique yelling-based approach to taxonomy). Pops. It’s all good. We’re pleased to re-re-confirm Mamas’ Tampa Bay Breakfast four and a half pancake rating.

one-pancakeone-pancake1one-pancake2one-pancake3half-pancake

After breakfast we had to change clothes because, well, we’re three and a boy and Things Happen. Then Marek and I went grocery shopping. He took care of the produce.

Anderson Road Cafe

Marek looks apprehensive. Is it my Angry Inch shirt? Note that the shirt is from the bar, and the bar is named after the movie.

anderson-kiss

We visited the Anderson Road Cafe at 6002 Anderson Rd on 3 April 2010. The Anderson Road Cafe was a recommendation from Tampa Bay Breakfasts fan Becky and turned out to be quite a gem, despite being tucked back in the middle of a vast industrial area. We drove past all kinds of spooky warehouses in search of this Tampa Bay Breakfast.

anderson-outside2

Inside was very charming, and it surely looked like they’d been slinging hash for quite a while. Check out that big honkin’ fish on the wall back there.

anderson-inside

Marek picked the seat by the race car poster. We knew we were in the right place when we saw this! Also check out how folks have written all along the walls. A nice touch! (Though we didn’t find any markers, so we did not write about how cool Marek is)

anderson-car1anderson-car2

The menu wasn’t extensive, but it had all the right stuff on it. We had the pancakes. And bacon. And eggs. And coffee.

anderson-menu

The very first thing that happened was coffee. This was good stuff. We couldn’t get enough of that bitter brew! And also, we had some jelly sculpture work to do.

anderson-coffee

And then breakfast came! That look on Marek’s face is, “what, that’s not bacon!”

anderson-breakfast1

I might as well just get Marek a big ole plate of bacon these days.

anderson-bacon

Marek, do you want to pay the bill? OK, here you go.

anderson-marek-pays1

Did Marek take the cash straight to the gumball machine? Yes. Yes he did. Did he get gumballs? No, he did not.

anderson-marek-pays2

We got out of there for about 11 clams. Not bad for two hungry boys.

anderson-bye

We’re pleased to present the Anderson Road Cafe with a Tampa Bay Breakfasts four-pancake rating. Thanks, fan Becky, for telling us about this great little breakfast!

one-pancakeone-pancake1one-pancake2one-pancake3

We ran errands after breakfast. First we got the oil changed in Mom’s car. If you ask Marek what car mom has, he’ll tell you it’s a “JEEP!” If you ask him what car dad has, he’ll tell you, “it’s a RACE CAR!” Boy knows what’s good!

anderson-oil

Then we stopped to get mom a surprise.

anderson-flowers1

Is this a guided missile straight into any girl’s heart? I believe it is. Sorpreso, mom! Special delivery!

Pipo’s Original Cuban Cafe

We visited Pipo’s Original Cuban Cafe at 411 S Macdill Ave in Tampa on 27 March 2010. This was our first visit to Pipos, and they have a very nice web site at http://www.pipos.com/breakfast.html. While Pipos is a chain, it’s a tiny little Tampa Bay chain so we consider them local.

pipos-outside

At the door we saw a sign saying that we could order our chow online. We’re kids of the new millennium, so that kind of thing is way-cool by us!

pipos-orderonline

Inside is warm and cozy. It’s not Sarkozy, but it’s definitely cozy.

pipos-inside

Pipos is the kind of place where you order at the counter, cafeteria style, and pay up front. Then if you had a special order they bring it out to you. While we were ordering, we noticed these killer sandwiches being made for the lunch crowd. Que bueno!

pipos-sandwiches

We paid up front. About 11 pesos for breakfast, juice, and coffee. That’s not bad. I’d say about average for us lately. Marek didn’t want to pay the bill, but he did want to leave the tip.

pipos-marek-pays

We had a choice of the American coffee or the Cafe con Leche. The American coffee was self-service, so we went with that. We can drink some gosh-darned coffee. After we sat down I noticed that everyone around us had gone with the Cafe con Leche, and after we got into the American coffee we sort of thought we’d been better with the other. It wasn’t bad, it was just average.

pipos-cars1

While we waited, a drag race broke out. I bet you’re thinking, well sure, Andy and Marek, that happens All The Time with you. Big deal, you say. Show me Something New.

Well here’s something you’ve probably never seen. A three-way drag race between a NASCAR racer, a DHL van, and a Tampa Bay Lighting Zamboni.

Toldja we’d have something new for you.

pipos-races

And who’dathunkit, but the Zamboni won! See there? The Lightning did not get COMPLETELY mauled this week.

pipos-zamboni

Then a big ole breakfast came out, in about 4 minutes from when we sat down. Blueberry pancakes, eggs, bacon. These are a few of our favorite things…

pipos-breakfast

My name is Marek and I Like Bacon. Took it all from me. Again. This bacon looked like it was Steve-Standard, but you’d have to ask The Boy for details.

pipos-breakfast-marek

I’m going to have to get Marek one of these shirts.

pipos-bigonthepig

We both liked these pancakes. The were better than last week’s, without a doubt, but really pretty average for the Bay Area. Tasty, filling, cheap, and fast. These are some of our favorite things about our favorite things.

pipos-breakfast-marek3

We walked out of Pipos with smiles. Good chow served quickly and cheaply. The Zamboni won the race. People were friendly and clearly locals at every table. There’s nothing not to like about Pipos for breakfast.

pipos-kiss

We’re pleased to give Pipo’s Original Cuban Cafe a Tampa Bay Breakfasts four pancake rating.

one-pancakeone-pancake1one-pancake2one-pancake3

Pipo's on Urbanspoon

When we were done, we went to the playground for a while. You can’t hear him in the picture, but Marek is actually reciting Alan Ginsberg’s “Howl” as he goes back and forth. Kid has a thing for the Beats.

pipos-swing

After all that swinging and poetry, we gotta, just gotta have an apple. That’s a Good Day.

Local Legends

We’re taking a long ride today! We’re ready!

legends-ride

We visited Local Legends at 20430 East Pennsylvania Avenue in Dunnellon on 20 March 2010. Local Legends is a new place in town and has the distinction of being owned by Marek’s first cousin once removed, Tommy. Betcha didn’t know how to do cousin math until you larned it here at Tampa Bay Breakfasts, now didja? Just a little extra syrup with your pancakes this morning, folks.

legends-outside

You walk in and find a nice and cheery bar. That’s right, it’s a bar that serves breakfast. And you’re surrounded by these red and black colors. You may find yourself wondering, why is this place all red and black? What are these legends? Is it some sort of tale of swamp monsters causing havock?

legends-inside

A closer look reveals the obvious answer. These are Dunnellon Tigers colors and the legends are star football players from over the years. That’s pretty nifty!

legends-dhs1

No pictures of math nerds or drama geeks like me, so let’s look at a menu. Prices are pretty reasonable for the area, though there’s not a huge selection. We brought our own yellow school bus to commemorate the DHS theme. I AM class of ’88, after all!

We had to get into some coffee in a hurry, after that long ole ride. This is us doing “cheers!”

legends-coffee

Marek liked him some coffee this morning!

legends-coffee2

While we were waiting for breakfast, we had a chance to check out some of the neat pictures on the walls. Here’s a rowdy looking group.

legends-oldtime

And here’s some younger lads, including Tom, Marek’s uncle.

legends-tom

And the place has home-made Bar-B-Que sauce. Now how cool is that?

legends-lacys

We got some time to goof off while we waited.

Check out my collector’s edition Yankeetown Sand Gnats t-shirt. Am I a paragon of style or what?

We had a chance to play bus races, too. This is one awesome little school bus. Probably driving the route on Highway 40 from Yankeetown to Dunnellon High.

And then … breakfast came!

legends-breakfast1

These are some whopper pancakes. They were pretty good, and the eggs were fine, too.

legends-breakfast2

I wasn’t a super fan of the bacon, but Marek took care of it all for me without really letting me have a chance to make an opinion.

legends-breakfast3

We ate our fill but didn’t see any cousins on this trip. Being as we’re professional reviewers, we didn’t announce ourselves. But since this place is in the family, we’re not going to be giving a review for fear of appearing biased. We got out of there for about 11 bucks, which isn’t bad for two hungry kids like us eating a full belly’s worth.

We were pretty sleepy on the way home.

legends-sleeping1

I mean REALLY sleepy.

legends-sleeping2

But we made it home. Thanks, Tommy, for a fun and nostalgic breakfast!

The Breakfast Nook

If you were driving down the road and saw this car in front of a breakfast place, would you stop? Well, of course you would! And that’s what we did.

b-nook-hands-car

We visited The Breakfast Nook at 1532 Land O Lakes Blvd. in Lutz on 13 March 2010. This was our first visit to The Breakfast Nook. They have a nice little web site at http://www.iwantbreakfast.com/.

b-nook-outside

There was a line out the door to get in the door. But here’s a nice twist, they have all kinds of outside breakfast tables. How cool is that? And no waiting.

It’s a good thing, because we’d been in the car a while. It’s a long story. There’s up-chuck involved, and Roary, a toolbox, and an apple. Oh, yes, and a Mormon, a Jew, and a Hindu walked into a bar. It was that kind of morning.

You think I make this stuff up? The reality is usually strange enough.

b-nook-outside2

There’s a kids’ menu, complete with pancakes and bacon. Marek’s favorites, right after cars. There was also a grown-ups menu, which was much less fun because it didn’t say “Kid’s” and didn’t have any menu items written in invisible ink, as you see here with the first item on the lunch menu.

b-nook-kids-menu

We’re outside. It’s kind of chilly out. Marek appears to be wearing a jacket with no shirt, and his pants are wet from spilled juice. And he’s walking around carrying a Leatherman. Obviously his mother was not involved with his care this morning. So dag-nabbit, let’s get some coffee! With extra attitude, please, ma’am.

b-nook-coffee

Do you think there’s any cars involved? Oh yes, sir! This appears to be some sort of customized MOPAR vehicle.

b-nook-marek-3

Dear reader, did you think I was kidding about the Leatherman? This kid comes prepared.

b-nook-marek-6

If you were two and a half years old and you had a car and you had a Leatherman, what would you do? In all honesty, if I had a car and a Leatherman, I’d be doing the same thing. But this was all Marek.

b-nook-marek-5

Lucky for that Chrysler, breakfast showed up. Did Marek eat all the bacon? Yes. Yes, he did.

b-nook-breakfast2

The pancakes were delicious. But you just can’t get around the fact that these are not what anyone would mistake for “Large.”

b-nook-breakfast-small-pancakes

But with some extra syrup we can overlook the size. Watch out for the Breakfast Blue Crabs! By which I mean the crab tattoo, not the nice girls sitting along the wall. They weren’t crabby at all.

b-nook-breakfast-small-pancakes2

Gotta wash it down with some coffee.

b-nook-coffee2

The bill came. 11 clams. Not bad at all.

b-nook-bill

We cruised on outta there with full bellies and even some change left over.

b-nook-marek-andy-1

Good chow. Coffee with attitude. Really nice people. We got to sit outside. It’s all good.

We’re pleased to give The Breakfast Nook a Tampa Bay Breakfasts four-pancake rating.
